C, ~ THURSDAY, JUNE 25th 19147" | No matter how hot the Summer Conway alw ys has the cooling sea breeze wnicn is Uie delight of many. * * * The tobacco season is expected to open at the warehouses here about July 20th. The crop will be larger than was expected at first. * * * * The rains of last week, while not heavy, still amounted to a great blessing, and they laid the dust for a while if nothing more. * * The Irish potato crop this year has turned out encouraging results for the farmers in spite of the dry weather that hampered them in making a very good crop. * ? If you would become proficient and successful in life's undertaking, take patcrn after Thomas A. Edison, who owes what he has done for the world to his habit of close observation. * * * * . Many people in this world fail to appreciate the value of small things, and they go on year after year, i throwing away that which another would save and thereby become better off. * * * * New candidates for the United States Senate will be in the race this Summer, and it will be the livest of any canpaign we have had i 11 this State for years, though some of them in recent history cannot be winked at for liveliness. + f * Every public improvement put in at Conway increases her chances just that much for growing commercially, and in population and material wealth. Those who visit the place will see what we are doingtyid will be that much more apt to cast "their money and lots in with us. * * * * The farmers should be careful who they entertain when it comes to the traveling agent or peddler of wares. Some, of them may be good men, but on the other hand some of them are wolves in sheep's clothing. If you iol/o 4- U^vm. -? vwivt; micin m you arc apt to trade with them, and it is there that you must be careful about getting- stuck. * * * It is important for the general public to know that in modern timqs even waste materials are being saved and utilized for making things that are not only useful to mankind but valuable. And it would pay most of the working people to read up on this subject and learn what to throw away and what to save. * + Anything can be bought the cheapest when purchased in the regular way from the manufacturer or dealer. What does the traveling agent care whether the goods come up to standard or not. As soon as he collects the money he is gone On the other hand the manufacturer or the home dealer at the county seat has a reputation to maintain, and ! knows it would pay him best to be honest in his dealings. + * * There are many people here who i delight in going out to the ball ground once a week or oftener to witness a game of baseball; but who are unwilling to contribute one cent to the support of the team, when asked to do so, or for the purpose of paying the expenses of other teams coming here to 1 play with our boys. It is time for ; lovers of this sport to wake up and help pay these expenses, and thus I make a reasonable return for the I amusement they receive from this ! source. * * * * I 4.1.. 11... T? 1 11 xvvwiiuy uiu vonway ouscuuu Team, in a game with the Georgetown team, won out on a score of seven to three. The Georgetown team is a good one, and it means that Conway has agood team. The Conway team in the past has not had the kind of suport that it needed from the citizens. If the people would encourage the boys to exccll in the game, and j help to pay the expenses of getting the teams of neighboring towns to come here, it is safe to say that by means of the increased practice the Conway team would get, we would soon have here one of the very best teams in the State. * * The greatest thing that is being thrown away day by day by nine tenths of mankind, and womankind too, as to that matter, is time itself. Most people have short working hours when they are attending to some business of their own and not working under a manager for some other person oi corporation. The ten or iiftoen minutes lost at different intervals throughout the day, if used for useful labor would hrincr lsivirp rosnlts in the course of ten years of life. But most people regard these little fragments of time as worthless, or at least they throw them away, which is equivolent to saying that they are are worthless, ^ V * * * * To look on the bright side of life and its affairs with an enthusiastic belief that everything is all right and for the best is ideal. This especially is true as it applies to those who come into contact with the sick. A physician, above all men, should be an optimist?ready to stimulate hope even though he may not have it himself. Hopefulness in the countenance and optimism in the words and actions of the physician are as sunshine in the sick-room; they stimulate hopefulness in the sick and courage that often has potent influence for good. Even when recovery is not possible, the Journal of the American Medical Association thinks that good, not harm, is done. They make life worth living while it lasts. The psychic influence is always felt as long as consciousness remains. Paget speaking of hypochondriacs, says, "Your chances of doing good will depend mainly on the skill with which you influence the patients mind; for of the components of his case the mental condition is the worst." * * * * For some time the small boy of a certain class in this town have been making themselves obnoxious to the residents of the town by prowling about at night near the hen roosts, and actually stealing the chickens. Things have gone to a pretty bad pass anywhere when the boys of self respecting white families in a town have descended to the level of the negro pickaniny and gone to stealing | chickens. A stranger would be hard to make believe that white boys had started such a practice. But it seems to be true, for the boys have been tracked it seems to the place in hiding where they meet at night and stew up these chickens with rice and potatoes and where they hold forth for nobody knows how late at night, and whore they carry on nobody knows what meanness and disipation. During the past wcek'Vfte chickens have been taken from Rev. Phillips, J. C. Spivey, .Mrs. .J. S. Causey, .J. U. Cox, and we . do not know how many others, it is not so much the value of the fowls whereby the losers are incensed, but it is the fact that the chickens were taken by white boys who have arrived at an age when they ought to act better, and really ought to be taught better than to carry on such nefarious practice. That it must be slimnnfl fr/wi c. ? ! 1 11 M wituuui saying', yVi 10W this to continue and it would be as well to prepare for something worse, j In short we had as well say that plans arc now on foot to teach these boys a lesson they will not soon forget. It would pay them to take warning while it is yet time, for they will be caught just as sure as they continue it, and in a way they are not exactly looking for. though he were a rascal at heart he The Best Hot Weather Tonic GROVE'S TASTKM'.SSchiil TONIC enriches the blood, builds up the whole system and will won Jerfully strengthen and fortifj you to withstnin the depressing effect of the hot summer. 50c. i J.
