Hard clean streets, straight cement sidewalks, water works and sewerage, and a. clean sanitary town in general, ? * * * The pooling breezes of Myrtle Beach will po doubt be enjoyed by many people tbis year. But the contrast upon returning will be hot and awful. * * Trust no mistakes when you go to cure rthat barn of tobacco. Just in proportion to the time and attention that you give it, will you turn out a fine grade, and that is what you want always. ? * * The tobacco crop in North Carolina and Virginia is very short this year, so that there is no chance of a market over supplied. Let the far mere or Horry County strive to produce the very highest grade of the weed, and they will be sure to get good returns. * * * Get the dust away from Main Street of Conway and you save the merchants and business men thousands of dollars in spoiled goods and office fixtures. It has been said that each person in the world has to eat a peck of dirt. Some of us have already had our share. * * * In the July Woman's Home Companion C. H. Claudy writes a little article entitled "Frank's First Camp,' in which he describes the best way to live in a tent. It is a practical article full of valuable suggestions for campers. Following is the extract: "The most important thing to learn in camp is not to drink water you don't know about. The river water looks good, but it may be full of all sorts of invisible filth. Spring water is usually all right. But when you don't know your water, boil it and cool it before you drink it. You can't be a good camper and neglect your own body." * * * * We are convinced that newly gathered oats when packed into close quarters will attract lightning. Just how this happens we are not prepared to say. But we have noticed foi year* that in newspaper accounts oi the burning of farmer's barns b> lightning, it is often set forth that the. farmers had just harvested and housed the oat crop in the building that was struck. Here in Conway when lightning struck the stables of A. W. Jenkins & Son, some years ago, and these stables as well as other nroperty went up in flames, Mr. Jenkins had just harvested an oat crop and had stored them In the sec| ond story of the building that was truck. The same year at about the same time there were reports in the state papers of as many as six farmers in different sections of this state who lost their barns by lightning, and in each of these cases it was also published that the farmers had just ar harvested and placed the oat crop in hi the barns. Since then almost every j'1 year we have noticed the same thing repeated in almost a hundred instau- jj, ces. Only recently the barns of Mr. M G. W. King were struck by lightning i ^ in Socastee. The correspondent stated ^ in his report that Mr. King had just <j( harvested his oat crop and lost it in et the fire. So if it be true that a new- ('i ly harvested crop of oats will attract ' lightning, the farmers should try to (j( devise some plan whereby the danger th will be avoided, arranging to keep J J them in some open shed so that the . * . . I <11 heat will be dissipated into the air. A few years later I do- a cided that there were certain days S better than others on which to cut h tobacco for it to cure up nicely and n have a rich, waxy and heavy body, n To find out the way to tell them h ahead has been a hard job, but I d was finally successful. To explain, let me say that tobacco p has an oily substance which is its nat- a ural possession. It has a sap (water) ( like other vegetation. When the sap f rises, it runs the oil out through the h pores of the leaves, on the principle n that oil and water won't mix, and oil a being the lighter is pushed out by the n sap. Tobacco cut and cured in this a state will be light and "chall'y" you o see, there is nothing but sap in the to- r bacco and when cured this sap is o gone. It evaporates and leaves the tobacco light and worthless. Hut to t> cut tobacco when the sap is down and ( the oil has full sway, you can cure it i up nicely and with a heavy body; it will be rich and "waxy." This hap- .
