The rules of the Democratic
primary will be stringent this
time if carried out will do much
to eliminate fraud and unfair
voting. But as we have said
before it all depends on the
character of the voter. An
honest man will not corrupt the
political machinery of his
country no matter if the rules
are slack and punishment for
wrong doing unprovided for.
But you can look out for the
rascal notwithstanding the party
rules and laws of the land.
He has always been more or less
in evidence and he is still not
suppressed. The only thing to
do is to try to control him.

It is the ruination of many a
man to place him in office where
he has the least bit of power.
Sometimes if you even make a
man a scool trustee, or the overseer
on a public road, it is only
a few days before he begins to
think that he is the supreme
ruler of the world. Whereas he
was before a neigbor of kind
words and gentle actions, he is
now become a tyrant, exercising
the limited powers of his
office the same as if he were
king. What he is and what he 1
was always intended to be,
crops out and shows in everything
he does. It is just so
right on down the line especial- !
ly the intendent and wardens of
a small town. They are gemer- !
ally men who are looking for
some personal benefit from the
office if it can be had, but when
it comes to exercising the few
small powers they have, they do
it in a way that is calculated
to disgust the ordinary citizen.
Because they happen to possess
one power it gives them the notion
that they can do anything
they please. They of course
have to deal with a few men
who are of lawless character
and who are hard to keep under
control. But the people of the
city or town as a general rule 1
are anxious to obey the ordi- ;
nances if they know what they
are and they are given a reasonable
chance. You might not be- ;
lieve it but in their own estimation
the two by four holders of :
a four by four office, have pow- \
ers that reach through the universe
and wich can control
everything. ]

Sunday, is not only a disaster to
the company itself, but is a sad I
blow to the entire business in- (
terests of the town and the
county. / ny company employing
a large number of workmen
as the Conway Lumber Co., did
can and does make itself felt as '
a community enterprise. It was <
delivering a pay roll every pay \
day of more than $2500.00, and ,
the bulk of this was spent by \
the workmen with merchants *
and the business men in general j
in and about Conway. After
the fire of Sunday the saw mill <
plant of course was not in operation,
and while the pay roll wns J
a considerable amount without 1
that department of their bust
less, yet the business of Conway
felt the difference. We have
not yet mentioned the serious
consequences of the workmen
themselves. Of course it is
understood that the company
will rebuild and will continue to
do business at the same stand.
Still the consequence which
follows a disaster of the kind
are sufficient to make everybody
vvilliniy in mftlffi PVei'V effort
to increase the town's protection
against fire, and each individual
to be careful in handling
things that may cause conflagration.
The one fire engine that
the town had when the fire
broke out at the lumber plant
saved at least fifty times its
cost, for without it the entire
plant including the planing mills
and other departments would
have been swept away. Too
many precautions cannot be
taken in such matters.
THE COMMITTEE MEETING
Held on June 1st for the Transaction
of Important Business of the
Party.
The proceedings of the meeting of
the County Democratic Committee
held on June 1st, were received too
late for publication in our last issue,
but it is now published for the information
of our readers.
The meeting was called to order at
the court house by acting chairman
J. O. Norton.
The following gentlemen were prsent
as shown by the roll call:

K. L. Mishoe made a motion to the
effect that the voting places remain
as they now are and that the executive
committeemen agree upon the
lines of the club districts as members
are enrolled and that they report to
the county committee at its next
meeting. This was carried.
E. S. C. Baker was elected as secretary
of the county committee.
It was decided that the county
committee shall meet again on the
first Monday in August.

Miss Mary Holliday last week entertained
the students of the 10th
grade at a reception in their honor,
