I r VOL XXIX in ism Mrs J. P. Williams, the Only Lady Pres. of a Railroad " HERE IN PRIVATE CAR Hit Been Hek? for a Week Meeting aM VPrUn^ inj ViilMnnf oi Childhood. Last week there was an item in the Georgetown papers, to the effect following: Mrs. John P. Williams, President of the Georgia and Florida railroad, arrived here Tuesday morning in Ytor private oar, accompanied by her secretary, Mr. McTyre, and Mr. J. Outland. Before her marriage to the late Jessie P. Will iams, she was Miss Cora Taylor, daughter of Capt. V?. H. P. Taylor, who resided at Union in the Pee Dee section of Williamsburg county. Mrs. Williams left in an automobile Tuesday Afternoon to visit her old home of her childhood, 4 It is stated that Mrs. Williams who is mentioned in the above item, formerly lived when a small ohild in 1 this county near the Tampico plan! tation of Hon. Mrs. Williams arriyed here in her Secial car on the afternoon train it Friday, and the car was placed ^ - In the siding at the depot, Several old friends were at the depot, or soon after her arrival, to greet her, among them Mr. Charles Dusenbury. To these she stated that she intended to visit various places in this county, among them the place in Dog Bluff where a portion of her young + childhood was spent, and Port Harrelson where her husband, the late Mr, J. P. Williams laid the foundation of the immense fortune that was used later by him in railroad building. Williams formerly used in going over his railroad line, a Mrs. Williams was formerly an * invalid, and was almost helpless it is stated for a number of years. She )iaa improved, however, as her ormer friendb will no doubt think when they read of her extended travels. Since her late husband's death she ^ baa been the president of the Geor^ gia & Florida Railroad Co., gaining thedht nction of being the only woman railroad president in the United States, very probaly the only one in the world. For thd purpose of trying to raise the Steamer *'Mitchell C." from the 1 bottom of the river where she has been lying for several ^weeks here, the Burroughs & Collins Co., recently purchased a powerful centrifugal pump from a concern in Georgetown, , The pump was brought here some time &QO and was rArkalrod and r?lnr> 'I . . ~ ... ""7 "~1'7 7 ea in position ior tne wor* iasi Thursday, The idea was to pump the water out of the hold of the sunken boat so that the hull could be raised. * The eqbipment was in readiness and the power turned on the pump last Thursday night. Some matter had been overlooked in the equipment, and the work was delayed until Saturday evening on account of this. On Saturday evening everything was in readiness. The steam for the engine was furnished from the "F G. Burroughs" through a large pipe. It was an unusual sight and many were interested in the experiment. A large crowd gathered on the wharves at the river front and watched the proceedings. The steam was turned on and the pump worked well as was shown by tne large stream of water that it emptied. The water was rapidly falling inside of the casings that had been placed over the hold and round the boilers. Suddenly the water quit sinking inside the casings and began to iil! again. It was discovered that the casings placed around the boiler had given way by reason of the presI Sure of thft mat.or nn flm ?4-?t ~ ? ? VU> UU ?UVy UUVaiUCl The work was then necessarily stopped until a new and more substantial casing could be put in. But the work on Saturday demonstrated the fact that it will be possible to raise the boat by means of this powerful pump. The find Came. Another one of Horry's sons has crossed the silent rivers that divides the fleeting present from the eternal future, and joined the rejoicing millions that gather around the great white throne of God. Mr, Willie H. Holmes, of Adrian, was born April Gtb 188G. Being reared by christian parents, ho very early became a member of Good Hope Baptist Church, and lived a sonsi8tent member until his death. True to hU church and Sunday School, he was happily conyerted in the year of 1909, and his life was a true example of christian living until the end came. He was taken seriously sick in the Spring of 1911, and was never well any more Though his sufferings were pitiful, even to observers, yet he bore them all with patience and was exceedingly thankful for every kindness bestowed upon him. Life was sweti to him; yet sweeter far is life in that bouutiful city to which we have every evidence he > has gone. Hi9 life in the home; his trueness to the church and Sunday School; his kindness to his fellow man and his loyalty to God estab lishes that sweet assurance that all I . was well with him when the suin! raons cauoe. | He quietly departed for the other i ; shore March 19.h 1914, leav.ug par-' ents, brothers and sisters and a numerous host of friends to mourn the los3 of a dut ful son, a noble influence and a faithful worker for the j cause of Christ. ( He was thoughtful, cheerful, kind hearted and true. He was praised , and loved by all his neighbors, and had a warm place in the breast of all who knew him. His Cousin Conway Methodist Church. TAKEN TO HOSIFAL While There Was a Dangerous Flesh Wound in the Knee, Physician did not Find it Necessary to Amputate the Limb,?Patient at Home Doing Well. J. P. Johnson while at work filling his position at the saw mills or Conway Lumber Co., last Thursday an accident resulted in one of the saws striking him on the leg near the knee, inflicting severe and painful injuries. The llesh about the knee was cut and lacerated and the muscles torn. He was at work at one of the edger tables at the time. One of the passages or gangways through or over which the lumber passed to one of the saws became clogged.) While things wore in this condition, a board came out of position, and passing along the rollers caught Mr. Johnson in the back and ho was forced forward with his legs against the saws. It Is stated that when he first came in contact with the saw, it was not running, but the machinery started up before he could get away. It was fortunate that the saw failed to cut in deep, and it was believed from from the examination made that the bones of the knee were uninjured. The injured man was taken to the hosipital of Dr H, H. Burroughs where everything possible was done for him, and later he was taken to I i_ i _ ? - is Dome wnere at last accounts he was resting easily. Mr. Johnsoa is well known in this section of the county. He was a prominent eaudidate for treasurer a few years ago. For many years ho held a responsible and lucrative position with the Burroughs & Collins Co. For severaL years past he has filled a position with Conway Lumber Company. The lirst strawberries to be ship- j ped from this section for the present , season consisted of one crate shipped away by express on Tuesday of last week by Messrs Ash by and Eastoup. < Since that time a few crates have 1 left by express from day to day, and it was not expected that a full car load of the fruit would be ship- ' ped from this point until about the middle of this week. The crop is now ripening rapidly and will likely | be handled promptly. It is interest ( ing to Know that last year a car load of berries left this point for the northern markets on April 8th. ? This shows how tardy the crop has 1 been this year owing to the cold weather. ^ ^ o m 1 A County Fair Circuit Association. C, R.
