The fact that men can see faults
in others and not in themselves is
Is
responsible for many of the slanders
nearly always going the rounds of the
community about some man or woman

Actions are what count in this
world no matter what the undertaking
maybe. It was never true that
words could amount to anything
unaccompanied by action of some
kind that could accomplish.

Those who attend the courts and
see the criminals face the judge,
never fail to think about how much
better it would be if all these were
aw abiding citizens, performing
their full portion in the work of the
world, instead of preying upon their
neighbors in one way or another.
Still crime goes on from year to year.
It is on? of the mysteries of the ages
why sin will cropouthere and there
in the race of men causing them to
violate the laws of the land and each
time come up to face the judgment
of the court'. Certainly it would be ,
better to lead law abiding lives. But

In the face of great obstacles,
under circumstances of black discour
agcment, the world, since its crea- c
tion, has gone steadily ahead and 1
has improved as a place for the ]
human race of man during his transitory
lije. Sometimes you hear
men state that times are growing o
I
worse and that ain la sorely getti ng
the upper hand. Tou need not pay
too much attention to such statements,
for what has been true for all
the centuries of the worlds history,
will be true for all time to come, for
history will repeat itself in this as in
other things. Just us the world has
improved during the past ages, so
will it do through ah those that are
to come.

The truth about the situation at
the State Hospital for the insane is
that they only had about one competent
doctor Lside f:om the superintendent
himself, and that one doctor
was Dr. Elenora 11. Saunders.
She was the one who went ahead all
through the seven long)ears of her
service trying to learn new methods,
introduce more efficient, rules and
practices, and makeit more pleasant
and comfortable for the unfortunate
inmates of the assylum. She was
the one that wanted to learn, and she
was the only it appears from the
testimony. She used her faculties
for the searching out of the diflicultied
in each indivdual case. Sbe
had no interestsoutside of the institu
tion for which she was working.
Her entire time was used in her
work. Then what was the jcause of
the unusual friction that brought
about the investigation and made
Governor Blease so uneasy and mad?
She was not a "HI ascitis' was a
part of it. All of the other hall
handed and incompetents were jealous
of her and her work. They 110
d oubt felt necessary things undone
which Dr. Saunders found it necessary
to do. One of he graetst mistakes
ever inade in relution to the
insitution was the circumstances
which would lead to her resignation
as a member of the staff. They
started in to tight her in the meanest
way men could schema. They
undertook to attnc.b- iw?r
4 -II -IV. v,""1 UVy -CI ,
an d only because she had been frequently
in tba company of I)r. Coop
er who was teaching her, the fact
that other nurses were always pres.
ent made no difference. The insinuation
was whispered and they
undertook to spread it. In the esti
mation of all right thinking people
I) r. Saunders has whipped them
all. Their actions appear to be
foolish now that the entire matter
has come out and is throughly understood.
