I VOL XXVIII. MAKE llffl I! Her Share of $2500.00 to be Awarded to Counties at The STATE FAIR NEXT FAIL In Relation to Which Some Important Matters are Brought to the Attention of Horry People in the Following Article. The State Fair Association will give about ?5.500 00 to thn omintipa of South Carolina, next fall at the fair, to ba held in Columbia. This will be apportioned out to the counties makiug an exhibit. There will be 44 booths for the Farm Demonstration Work and 20 booths for the Canning Club . work. Horry County will be entitled to two of these bonhs, one for the Farm Demonstration work and one lor the Catming Club work. Now the thing for us to do is to begin now and send in the yery best products that we produce from now until then, and win the first prize. We can if we will. The U. S. Department of Agriculture has made arrangements with a Cold Storage Firm in Columbia to keep all perishable products on cold storage until the State Fair, the last of October. This will be done free of charge fcr any one, who will send in their products to the County Demonstration Agent. II U ?* I I A. -1 uurry u?a uup ui i<uu UCbL uottdoes to win the tirtt prize in this State. We produce all kinds of truck, fruit and general farm crops. And I am suie we can surpass anj%other county in the production of Strawberries and irish pct-t >es as well as some of the fruits. We cannot afford to allow Horry County not to be represented as this county is making such great advance ment along agricultural lines. Our County Pair last fall is just an example of what can bedone here. In sending in your exhibit, use every precaution in selecting and handiiug. Don't always select the largest of a variety, but take every point of score in consideration. If you have a product that you vould like to send in and dout know j j.t how t) handle it, 1 will come to your farm and select it and ship it for you without one cent of cost to you. The products that will keep until fall cau be delivered to me at Conway or kept on tue farm until the County Fair here next fall just before the State Faia. Every man that is a real citizen and wants to help advertise bis 4 .. . U ~ . 1 ,1 1 ill! A J.. vuuuuj oiiuuiu ut" wining uuu reau_y to give a sample of what his farm or business produces. On last Thursday preparations were being made at two or three different places for the erection of new brick buildings, which will add to the wealth, the size and the business of Conway. One of the places was the old Mollie Johnson lot, whero for a long number of years, the old negro servant lived. It was being cleaned off for the new People's Tobacco Warehouse. Another place was the vacant lot of Burroughs & Collins Co., next door to everybody'e store. Here will go up two stores, one of them to be occupied by May 1st, by the Horry Drutf Co., of which Dr. Andersen will be the manager. The third place at which preparations started was the store of the Nortdfe Drug Co., on Main Street. Here the present wooden building will be torn down and a handsome j one q! brink and plate glass will take ! ill place. Altogether we are proud of tne great start that has been, made to add to this growing town during the year 1914 Besides those above mentioned there are several others contemplating the erection of new business structures in the town| before the present year has seen its close. You may watch Oouway! Mark our prediction, which was that in the oourse of the next' few years she will be among the larger towns of the eastern Caroliua9. Burgan and other officials of the Eddy Lake Cypress Co., were served with an injunction some days ago prohibiting a contemplated sale to Conway Lumber Co., of certain timber and rights held by the Eddy Lake Cypress Co., in which company Mr J. W, Little is the owner of "took. It was ajt the suit oi Mr. Llltti that the injunction was issued. The facts seem to be that after a tentative sale had been made to Conway Lumber Co., of this prop erty, the estimators of this latter company made the amount of timber very much less than the estimates of Mr. Little when the timber was first Surchased by -he Eddy Lake Cyprese o. A plan had been made to make this apparent shortage good, but Mr Little, as a stock-holder believes the old estimate was correct, especially allowing for the growth of the timber since the date of the original deeds, hence the injunction suit, IT 11 ii if wwi CONWAY, S. C., THURSD IIII11 Under Charges of Being Drunk and Disorderly MEAN WHISKEY SAID To be Cause of the Several Fusses Tht it Took Place Last Week at The Cow way Lunch Room, During Absence of the Proprietor on Business Trip. On last Wednesday, Claude Mills, a white man, who was employed as cook at the Conway Lunch Room, was tried in the Mayor's court on charges of drunk aud disorderly couduct and was liued in the sum of $20.00. He had been arrested by the town authorities at the * restaurant where he worked on the even ing before, and had beeD kept in tho town look-up overnight awaiting trial and in order to get over the freu/.y under which he seemed to be laboring at the time ho was arrested. The matter was the cau9e of considerable exoitment for a while on lower Main Street on Tuesday evening just befor he was arrested. The proprietor of the restaurant, Mr. V. B Summerlin, left Conway the day before to yiBit his former home in North Carolina on business. He left Mills in ob&rgo it appears. The man seemed to be under the influence of Whiskey and during Monday and Tufesday was disposed to raise trouble with several people. Finally it iR said he struck bis slater who was also at the iuoeh room, and the authorities then took him in charge. I On Tuesday night |be proprietor | returned and it took him some time to straighten out affairs. The afj fair wa9 unfortunate for the proprietor of this popular place. Be ! recently purchased the business from i Buckley Bros. The business was doing very well at that time and it has been steadily growing under the new management. He is a married man and is said to have one child. He is expert and very handy with cooking utensils and is said to have had a long experience at thai kind of employment After his arrest and confinement in the town lock-up, the fuss that ho kept up at the door attracted a large crowd of men and boys to the town hall, and they filled the passage leading through the building for several hours. The defendant while looking through the bars made dire threats against the officials of the town and all people connected with them. He was in this frenzy for several hours. Often he would take hold of the iron door and with a strength which seemed to be immense for a man of his s 23, would make it rattle on the binges, until it showed signs of giving away. The policemeu made haste tostrengthen the door with another lock. ' Many readers in t :e community nave enquired as to the terms upon which the ease of Stall vs. Stalvey wa9 settled at the rooent t irm of the court. T. B. Cooper was the pros- < ecutor in tho case- The warrant alleged that the vards in front of the landing at Peach f roe hat1 been obstructed by a fence on the properly of the Messrs, Stalvey. The | /once which was chained as being an obstruction was about on the line bet-veen Mr. S .alvcy and the land of Burroughs & Collins Co.. whose land also fronts on the creek. Mr. Cooper had obtained a frontage from Burroughs & Collins Gj , and was making preparations to build a warehouse and wharf when tne fence mentioued was erected so that ho | could not get to tje place without goirg through the deep swamp. The matter was amicably se t'ed by \ the Messrs. Stalvey granting in consideration of $5.00, a part of the right of way aloug their line, pulling in their wire fence about six feet and j extending on thoir laud to public road and by Burroughs <fc Collins Co., giving the. remainder along their line. The right of way will be opened up as thus located and there will be no further queftiou in regard I) the matter. The Messrs.
