played out. The campaign in the
southern states has been effective.
The beauty of it is that the people
have been taught means by which

The matter of a clean town means
individual cleanliness around the
premises of each citizen and business
place. Jj t every man get this idea
and there will be no trouble about
keeping the town in a clean and san
itary condition.

Good people everywhere are turnirg
their attention to the organized
suppression of vice. In nearly all
of the large cities there are commissions
and associat'ons for the suppressit
n flf the social evil, aud the
same spi rit is now reaching down to
fc he smaller towns.

last several years. The town authorities
have been active in the matter.
Nothing better could have
been done for the progress and im?
provement of conditions. Let this
policy be continued.

The common remark of many
people now is, that they have never
sun in all their lives snch progress
and improvement as has been made
all over Horry County during the
past two or three years. All that
they say is true, and more. The

The people in the country are
often careless about the drinking
water. They locate wells sometimes
in very unusal places and after the
wel's are located they hardly ever re
ceive any attention. Had water is
allowed to drain into them and the
consequences of this carlessness often
coftt many lives, and has been known
to wipe out not only the particular
family, but almost an entire community,?
all from the germs thriving
in one polluted well.

More and more furmers of the
country are using power in the conduct
of their business and in the per
tormance of work that formerly was
done by hand at great labor. The
motive power they are using is the
gasoline engine. Every great movement
in this or any other line of development
has its difficulties to be

if not the very greatest difficulties
which the farmer meets in the use
of gasoline engines in this day is his
ignorance of the principles upon ,
which they work, and the care that
they riquire in order that he may
work them economically and that
the engine may have a long life of
usefulness and his investment in it
br'ng him the proper returns. This
is the reason why we say tlmt the
proper running and care of gasoline
engines should be taught in the com
inon schools, so that the boy and
even the girl will know from infancy
thetheor es that will enable them by
experience to run and take care of
gasoline engines on the farm. Many
a man has purchased a gasoline engine
and used it with pleasure for
duys or weeks, then was compelled
to throw it away or send it to the
factory for repair*, and this all
caused bv his ignorance of the nrin

Cash Grocery Sold.
Last Thursday the stock of goods, ,
store furniture and fixtures, and ,
soda fountain and fixtures belonging
to the Cash Grocery Company, on
Laurel Street, was sold at public
auction by John H. McCaskill, as
agent of the 1st National Bank, the
holder of a chattel mortgage against
the property. The sale took place
in front of the town hall and was
well atteuded. The property was
knocked down to V. 1) Johnson,
who was the holder of a second mort- j
gage against the stock. I
until several months ago the bus- 1
mess was run by Messrs. B. O. Todd
and E. K. Todd. Mr. E. H. Todd

the store was closed under the mortgage,
Mr. Capps had an interest in
