Some Facta About Hookworm.
The prevalence of this disease in
he southern states was discovered
oy Dr. Stiles in 1902. Work for the \
eradication was first begun in 1910, n
and is now being carried on through H
out the South. Over 500,000 persons
have been treated; 50,000 having ?
oeen treated in South Caroliua. '
The work has been carried on in ^
every county except Charleston, j,
Kershaw, and Saluda. Of all per- (
sons examined microscopically, over I
:10 per cent were infected; of child- I
ren, living in rural districts, over r
40 per cent were infee'ed. In fully
naif of taese cases the iufected persons
appeared healthy. The disease 1
is not hard to cure, but this requires
several doses of medicine. The e
youngest person treated was one
year of age, the oldest was ninety- J
four. Wherever soil pollution is a
practiced, the diseaso is certain to t
prevail. e
Will these facts sutfice to make i
our people do their utmost to make I
their promises sanitarv. 1
