II&dHecn Dead for Several Hours,
Perhaps all Night, and Was Lying
\ With Pace Down in the [5irt,- Signs
. of Foul Play, Hut This Was Doubt<
ed.
; Some one ran into town to the
authorities last Saturday morning,
rfrom the suburbs, of Conway and
* ireported that the shoe maker, J. H.
Driver, had been found dead in an
<cld field, near the new road leading
:from Conway to Georgetown, and in
rear of the heme cf a colored woman
ir.tmed llat tie Bellamy. Investigation
proved that ho was lying
idead, face downward inthediit, and
iho had apparently been dead for
several hours, and he had taken
imuch of the heavy rains that fell
tdurirg the nigt t before, lie bad
mo relatives in Conway, but a message
was sent the chief of police of
W huteville,, N. C., where the deoeased
came too-ai, teqiestiig him to
lind the main 's Relatives and let them
take st.'ps to kaJsc care of the regains.
He was about thirty jears of age.
He came here several years ago and
rented a shop in which he'conducted
the busine: s of repairing shoes. He
was engaged in this calling up to
the time of his death. He was a
hard drinker at times, and also
sulTered from fits.
When the body was found there
were signs of bruises on the face
and about tho forehead, and his
face was covered witn blood. Near
his feet there lay a broken piece
of an axe handle, These things
pointed strongly to foul play and at
first there were many who believed
the ^hoe-maker had been murdered
if* cold blood. Later when the body
was examined by a physician, the
. opinion changed to some extent and
it was decided that he probably got
ithe -bruises when he fell, and the
)piece o/ haudle proved to be about
iTotten. Jt was also stated that as
ihe felhdown on his face he raay have
smothered >to death.
.The coroner was called and a jury
retqpanelled,to .find the cause of his
dt(iU|h if possible. They met and decided
to wait .until next Saturday
