H. Driver, had been found dead in an <cld field, near the new road leading :from Conway to Georgetown, and in rear of the heme cf a colored woman ir.tmed llat tie Bellamy. Investigation proved that ho was lying idead, face downward inthediit, and iho had apparently been dead for several hours, and he had taken imuch of the heavy rains that fell tdurirg the nigt t before, lie bad mo relatives in Conway, but a message was sent the chief of police of W huteville,, N. C., where the deoeased came too-ai, teqiestiig him to lind the main 's Relatives and let them take st.'ps to kaJsc care of the regains. He was about thirty jears of age. He came here several years ago and rented a shop in which he'conducted the busine: s of repairing shoes. He was engaged in this calling up to the time of his death. He was a hard drinker at times, and also sulTered from fits. When the body was found there were signs of bruises on the face and about tho forehead, and his face was covered witn blood. Near his feet there lay a broken piece of an axe handle, These things pointed strongly to foul play and at first there were many who believed the ^hoe-maker had been murdered if* cold blood. Later when the body was examined by a physician, the . opinion changed to some extent and it was decided that he probably got ithe -bruises when he fell, and the )piece o/ haudle proved to be about iTotten. Jt was also stated that as ihe felhdown on his face he raay have smothered >to death. .The coroner was called and a jury retqpanelled,to .find the cause of his dt(iU|h if possible. Tne Horry County Teacher's Association at its regular meeting on January 17th decided to an Oc^t ?rical cor tsst March the 20th ana School Field Diy on March the 21st. The Orut rical coutest will be held in the Burroughs School at 8:110 p. m., March the 30th. Twofold medals will be oil red, one to the #irl who delivers the best recitation and one to the boy who delivers the best oration / Any school in Horry County any enter contestants for these medals. One boy and one girl may be sent from each school provided the school has tirat held a preliminary, the winners in these preliminary con test? to represent their school in the final contest on the 20th of March All contestants must bo enrolled by March the 10th. Judges will bo selected from outside the County if possible. Teachers who desire to enter their schools for this contest should notify Supt, A. W. Bradley, Conway, S, C., at once. Field Day. The County Field Day will be Saturday, March thu 21st, Literary contests will be held in the morning aud athletic contests in the after noon. The program will be as follows: 11 o'clock a M. Conuty Spelling Match, any school in the County may send contestants. Best outline map of South Carolina. Bust map of Horn County. Time 10 minutes each. Best Composition by H h ard 0 h grade students. Time 20 minutes, Subject to be assigned when the contestants are ready to begin writ 'UP Best examination in Arithmetic, open to all, time 30 minutes. A bronze medal will be given to the winner iiueach of these contests The athletic events will take place in the aitarnoon beginning at 3 o'clock. Any school in the County may enter any one or more of tho following contests. 1 50 yards dash, for boys under 14 years of age. 2. 100 yards dash, open to all. 3. Stauding broad jump. 4. 220 yards dash. 5. High jump. (>. Running broad jump. 7. Shet put. 8. Base ball throw 0. Three legged race. Myrtle Beach Items. The people of Myrtle Beach are enjoying the extremely good weath er for the last few weeks. The health of this place is generally good except a few cases of bad colds. Mr William Todd is suffering with a bad cold at this time, but we hope that ho will soon be bet'.er. The farmers are getting ready for thi9 year's work especially irish po tato planters, and think there will j be more irish potatces planted this year than evte>* before. me t* jm s s is progressing nicely. A party consisting of Mr aod Mrs H W Ambrose, Mrs A W Barrett, Mrs (1 F Nissen and Miss Evelyn Little, went to Wilmington by way of automobile last Thursday and returned early last Saturday morning. They were late getting in home on account of an accident to the machine. Friends were sorry t> learn of the recent illness of Mr. B.shop Stalvey at his home in Socastee. Ooe day recently he tell from a machine he was using on his farm, and was entirely helpless, being unable to move any pan 01 nis body except his head. As he fell his head re sted directly in the way of tho wheel?, so that if the horses had moved, he would have been killed iiy hard etT jrts he managed to wring his neck and head until he thought it was out of the way. Finally he was found by some one in* this condition and taken to his home. It was stated the tirst of last week that Dr. J. K. Stalvey said that his trouble was then thought to be less serious than at first. Tho town Clerk's cflice haa recently been altered by nroviding an entrance on the side. This * makes the < llice a lot better and more convenient of access. George J. Holiday of Galivants Ferry spent last.Monday in Conway on business. Mr. Atkinson of Jordanville, who is connected with the Jor danville business, also spent a portion of the day here. Mrs. u. J ueii, of Wampee, a sister of Clerk of Court W. L. Bryau, was ill at bor home la&t wees, bLt was reported as being better the latter part of the week. On the second Sabbuth in Feb ruary Uev. Addie iiolt, lavt week fell into a yol of hot water and its head and shoulder was painfully burned. The child was playing about the wash pot in the yard wbere washing wai being done. All at once it fell in and get out without turning the pot over. L<\>r a while it was thought that the child's injuries were quite serious. It appears that the oflice of tho Clerk of the Couit of Common Pleas and General Sessions is among the best paying in the whole business. During the year of 1913, Mr. W. L 1 Bryan, the Clerk of the Court, took 1 in the sum of $238 72 over and above the su'.a.io* provided for himself and his assistants.
