January 20th at about the hour of <
8:30 at the school auditorium, when i
the boys and girls from the various I
schools of the county will deliver
speeches and talks on various sub- I
jects jutt now claiming the interest i
of educators all over the country, j
This feature will be very interesting
and also instructive. <
On the mornicg of January 21st,
the literary exercises will tike
place at the school auditorium.
The great feature will be the county
spelling match, In the contest
there will be a representative from I
nearly every school in the county.
This is bound to be interesting. Who .
is it that will fail to remember the 1
spelling matches of former days?
On the afternoon of the 21=t, the
athletic exercises will come off on (
the grounds of tbo county oourt ,
house. The various out door games
and plays that may be used in the
common schools w.th bene lit to the 1
students, will be illustrated, and 1
students from many d.tTerent schools
will take part.
The exercises will be open to all \
who desire t:> witness them. It
will bo an occasion when the parents
may enjoy themselves as well as the
boys and girls they are sending to
the schools. So it is expee'ed that
large crowds will be present to witless
the exercises. As a general
rule the parents are interested very
much in what is being done for the (
advancement of their boys and girls (
and this being true, they panuol
"ail to attend thpse exercises.

improve the Sidewalks,
For seyeral years past the town
has been improving its sidewalks,
more or )o-w. On some of them ci
orient walks ware laid, and these
nave been the pride of the town
over since. In 11 ier places buildings
and trees have been removed
improving the walk to some extent.
But still there is very much to be
done. In olacos there are trees and
roots growing in the middle of the
i path, and other places havo structures
extending beyond the proper
lino, 80 that those who use the
walks cannot steer a straight
oourse. Qi one important sidewalk
in the town on toe street nexo
to Main, tree roots seriously oh
1 struct it and walking is very difficult.
It is in one of the most populous
sections of the town at that.
If nothing else could bo done, we
' see no reason why a few roots could
* not bo cut out and the trees re*
' moved. Sometimes thirds are not
* done because no complaint is made.
' There can be no such excuse now in
* regard to this pariioular matter.
