Now York Police Seize Twenty Black
1 Inmlers.
Twenty members of tho "Black
Hand" society, alleged to bo tho nucleus
of tho bomb throwing gang that
lias terrorized tho foreign section
of New York for tho past year,
aro under arrest in New York city.
Tho police helievo they have captured
tho leaders of th<? dreadod society
in America and that there will
bo no more bomb outrages, at least
so far as this society is concerned.
Three of tho members of tho gang
have confessed to tho police. They
have unfolded tales of crime that will
keep tho detective forco busy for
several weeks and may result in
scores of arrests among tho criminal
classes of New York. Stories so far
told by the men under arrest account
for over 100 bomb outrages, tho
theft of 20 horses, tho poisoning of
as many more animals, counterfeiting,
blackmail, extortion, arson and
even murder.
Tho arrests and confessions of tho
accused bomb throwers came under
conditions that would have delighted
a dramatist. Alfred Lehman and
John ltizzo wero .arrested in Hudson
county, N. J., charged with blowing
up a factory in Lyndhurst. Tho Hudson
county authorities notified the
New York police, and two detectives
went to Haekensack, secreted themselves
in tho jail, and there heard the
prisoners discussing their part in
numerous "Black Hand" operations.
The detectives caused the arrest of

tween tlie two prisoners. As soon as
Lehman spied Levantrino he gripped
! tho bars of Ids cell and shouted:
"You will try to cheat me, will you?
I'm tho man who blew up your
, house."
"Then you're the chap who killed
I my daughter," shrieked Levantrino.
Hlzzo reproached GimbronO for forcr

I Gimbrono accused Rizzo of treachery.
Detectives caught every word in the
1 accusing thrusts of the prisoners and
3 used them in building up their chain
of evidenco against tho suspected

According to detectives, tho gang
i is now new. Ono man has belonged
14 years. Tho membership was constantly
changing. When a member
was killed, sent to jail or went back
I to Italy with enough money to live
on for tho rest of his life, new mem
bars were taken in and the size of
j the gang was kopt about tho same.

Should 1h> Severely Punished for
Their Disregard of Life.
A littlo over two years ago a
dreadful disaster occurred in a New
York factory known as tho "Triangle".
In that tiro one hundred and
forty lives wero lost, and they wero
lost mainly because tho exits from
tho building wore locked and so tho
young women employees wero caught
much as a rat is caught in a trap.
One result of tho tire was tho passing
by tho legislature of a law compelling
all exits to bo open. But, as
is often tho case, tho law has not always
been observed. In fact, in tho
very same factory tho doors have
again been locked thus making possible
another tragedy.
To bo suro the proprietor has been
fined for his act but only to the miserably
small amount of twenty dollars.
That is a travesty of justice
and reflects anything but credit upon
tho judge who tried the case, or else
upon tho law itself. In efl'oct the

Friend Hits Pal With Stick, Discharging
Pistol.
Ah Deputy Sheriff Sanders wan escoring
Judge Ilayno F. Rico of Aiken,
presiding over circuit court at Anderson,
through tho court houso to a
hotel for dinner recess Thursday, a
friend struck the officer with a stick,
causing the oillcer's pistol to ho discharged.
The bullet toro the seat of
Sanders trousers, struck tho tiled
floor, glanced and buried itself in a
window jam. Tho incident caused
some excitement as tho corridor of
tho court house was crowded at the
time. While Deputy Sanders was remonstrating
with tho man who dealt
tho blow Judge Rice romarked characteristically
that tho man "had acted
very foolishly". Tho bullet harmed
no one. The blow causing tho discharge
of tho pistol was dealt in a
friendly way and the man dealing the
blow was as much surprised as any
body when the pistol fired.

Harry Goldman, proprietor of theT)r.
Huux Spectaclo Company of St.
Louis, Wednesday was found guilty
in the Federal Court on a charge of
using the mails to defraud. IIisbrother,
Morris Goldman, was acquitted.
The business of the firm last

Goldman explained that his brother
was not a responsible partner in tho
Jinn but an employee. It was charged
the flrin advertised in newspapers
an offer to send the reader a livedollar
pair of spectacles if ho would
return a coupon, which was a part of"
the advertisement. The prosecution
claimed the spectacles were not sent
unless a dollar was forwarded with
the coupon, and that the lenses were'
such as no reputable optician would
sell. Goldman explained that he advertised
to send the lenses free in
return for the coupon, and the namesof
four persons who needed spectacles,
but that the dollar covered the
