The State vs. Charlie Hardee was called for trial, and the defendant was found guiltv l>y the jury. His sentence was $k20.00 or 4 months, 1 In tho State vs. M. P. Tyler, charg ed with resisting an otlioer was tried on Wednesday, resulting in a verdict of not guilty. Tno State vs. Win. Friend for entering house with intent to steal, defendant pleaded guilty and was sentenced. The State vs. Gleaton Sessions, Jim Anierson and Frank Anderson, charged with riot and assault an d batlery pleaded guilty and were sentenced to a tine of $50.00 or four mon ths. The next case called was that of Tho State vs.* Quince D Grahsvm, charged with assault and battery with intent to kill. The occurrence took place at Ay nor, S. C., in the store cf J. T. Shu)ley. Mr. Shelley and others were present from Aynor as witnesses in tae case. The case was terminatid by withdrawing the plea of not guilty and pleading guilty to assault aud battery of a high and aggravated nature. The grand jury hero came into court and made their final presentment. The following six of their number were drawn to serve on the next grand jury: G. W. Cat trelte, J. M. Kirfcon, D. G. Spivey, G, W. King, W. F. Lupo, ill. M. Meares. After the recess on Thursday the the court proceeded with the easo of The S ate vs. John M. Caunon eharg cd with assault and battery on Archie M. Cook. At the last term of the court this case v/as tho reverse, the prosecutor A M. Cook was tried for hitting John M. Cannon over the head with a telephone insulator. In that case at tho last term of the court A. M. Cook was p.nnvii t ?d nml paid 110 penalty. It was proved before the jury that Cook was convicted in the other case. The jury quick ]y cleared tae defendant. The State vs. P. P. Tyler f >r disposing of property under lien was con tin ued, Many cases of violation of the dispensary law were continued, anions the in being Robert Chestnut, Herbei t Moore, Phenie Deweit, each in a separate indictment. Henry Marshall was cleared of the charge of not supporting his wife and child. This case had been regularly bound over by a magistrate, but the negro's wife went on the stand and swore that he had support ed her. The Judge stated in passing l hat perhaps she had changed her mind since tho magistrate had investigated tho case. Orphanage Work Day. Saturday October 4th, is to be observed by Sunday Schools of the different denominations of South Carolina. The Orphanages need your help. Tho parents should not leave this import tot duty to their children alone, but should join in with them and give a day's work also. Many of our churches have not contributed an} thing this year to the orphanage. There are nine children at Connie Maxwell Orphanage from Horry County, at an expense of about $900.00. We (Baplihts) should contribute at least that much this year. No denomination has a right to expect any more from its Orphan ago than what it puts in t. We can raue the amount, if wo will. A Successful Meeting. A successful protracted meeting, which has been in progress at Rehoboth Baptist Church for the past week came to a close Sunday night. Sept. 21st, Rev. W. A. Coleman, pas tor of the charge was assisted by Rey C. P. Bullock. They have accomplished a good work and the membership has been greatly revived. Twenty-six additions to the church, twenty-five by baptism and twenty-five confessions resulted from ^ this series of meetings. One Present. H. P. We have visited tho county jail tud county ollices, Wo tiud them n tfood repair except tho Supervisor's Otlice and one column iu the front of the court house. Wo urge that both tho Supervisor's Ollieo tnd the column be ropai red at once. Wo called attention to these defects last court bub nothing has been ione. The Committee which was appoint ed to Examine the county ollices has already made a favorable report on the Clerk, Superintendent of Education, and Probate Judge otliees, and now wish to say that the Treasurer's and Auditor's ollices arc als >"in a good condition, having reaen.ly made the annual settlement wit.i the Comptroller General. Relative to tho ShorilT's ollicc, wish to say that we tind the new sheritl's ctlice administration good, so far his having gotten a new set of books and they are neat and well kept, Relative to the Supervisor's ollice, wish to sav that we find no re cord of any meeting from September 3rd, 1912 to March 1913, except that and some clerical errors wo find the ollice well kept under the preseut system of book-keeping, but we respectfully urge that a still better system be adopted for instance, a double entry system, such as is commonly used in a well organized mercantile business, requesting the board to get off a monthly state ment showing the condition of the county's funds, etc Wu prosont Walker Johnson, IJa good Lewis, and Seymour Lewis, for assault and battery with intent to kill, and carrying concealed weapons. A pistol was taken otT of Jim Davis, and Smnmerlield Coch ran was mixed up ia the light, some of the parties being seriously cut in the row. Relatives here received the sad news last Monday of the sudden death of Miss Pearl Powell at Florence, S. C., and Misses Mabel Norton and Louise Powell left on Monday afternoon for that place. The Horry Industrial School opened Us doors on last Wednesday under very favorablo circumstances, and with an attendance which pleased the management and friends (f the school. The day was cool The occasion was enjoyed by a large crowd of pooble who gathered there from nearly all paits of Horry County. The exercises were conducted from the East north. His remarks were to the point, and his speech was thor oughly erjoyed and he received close attention. The next speaker was W.W. Hong. He delivered an interesting address on the school an its future as ho saw it, Prof S. H, Brown, the County Superintendent of Education, was introduced, His address wasamoog the best delivered. Mr. C. District Superintendent of Farm Demonstration Work, made a short talk upon the organization of the Boys Corn Club in ID 10. lie had an exalted opinion of II >rry and her people, and stated that no county had made greater strides in the improvement of agricul ture. Dr. Watson then introduced the faculty. Dr. Watson would have general supervison aud would teach als\ Mrs Watson would act as a mother to the boys and girls, and it was asked that all coulide in her. Prof. W. B, Coker would have general supervision of the academic work lie has fifteen years experience. Mr. W. W. Wall, professor of agriculture would manage the boys in ] their dormitory. C. R. Scarborough, professor of mechanics. Miss Graham, of Home, Ga., would toach domestic science. Miss Caldwell of Newberry, plain and fancy sowing, Ida Moore, of Conway would teach the lower grades. Miss Moore returned thanks to the men who made it possible to have this industrial, school. Mrs Cokor would teach music. Dr. H. L. Scarborough ha9 been l-i i ? - - * eiecieu as pnysician lor the school. He will also make regular lectures on hygiene. John Emory Watson will have charge of the book-keeping and stenography. He will also act as private secretary to the president of the schcol company. The services were concluded by Rev. M. Roten. Everybody feels an interest in this latest addition to the educational advantage located at our doors, and there is no one but who will try to help it along in one way or another.
