AVOID IT LIKE DEATH
Avoid the breadth of scandal as
you would death. Scandal is bad
enough when it comes into the life
of a man or woman in the afternoon
of this earthly existence. Our adyico
is directed mainly at the young
men and women of the day who are
in the morning of life, and who have
the greater and more important por
lion of life beforo them ytt to be
lived, The advice is especially
intended for the young women ol
our 1 and, for scandal amounts to
more to the m than it does to the
young men. It is said that this
n 11 c/11 t. lint ift Itn l\n no en o ml i\o??
w ? I.wv uu WWW V>UOL| UUU | M I
haps it ought uot to bo, but people
arguo many things that ought not
to be, and often try t) show that
such and such is not the case and the
whole world knows it in spite of all
the talk and argument, Therefore
we would regret to hear a youn^
woman say that she could do every
thing that a young man might do,
go to the sumo places, have the
same associates, and commit the
same little improprieties and indiscretions,
and be hurt no worse thaa
the young gentlemen. Such an argument
on the pait of any youn^
lady is foolishness in the extreme,
and if she sticks to it, she will find
ruin in her path sooner or later. It
is true as intimated at the beginning
of this parsgraph that scandal
means death, especially when applied
to the lives of the young. Too
often some trival action on the part
of a young lady leads to the most
dire results in her life and character,
f * _i? t i .1
uiiu wuno suo may ieaa itie rest of
her days blameless in the sight of
God, still it is never fully lived down,
and it remains to torment her in one
way or another to the end of her
days II >w careful then ought she
to l)a in the conduct of her life. We
refer to no particular persons. We
are writing of them as a class, and
what we say applies to all, and not
thoso of any special community. But
we t link we can give advice, which
if followed by the young ladies of any
community, will help to keep them
out of trouble. Looking into almost
any community, you will find young
ladies who make it a habit to have
chums among the young men of the
neighborhood. Generally it is not
ne young mau alone, but several
vho seem to live every clay in the
jood graces and admiration of the
livlnity. The several who seem to f
lave won her favor waive at her on "
die street as they pass, call on her (
rcquenlly at the home, and take
turns in going with her from plate i
to place, and at times which might <
eo variously placed throughout the ^
ontire twenty-four hours of the clay. |
In the same community may he a J
young man who has in bim the ener- <
gy and ambition to make a man of
himself, and to that end he is spending
his timoin hard work and study,
lie has no time to throw away like
the others to give the girls a good
time, but he intends at some time
during his youth to marry toe best
young woman he can find and establish
for himself a family and make
a living and may bo fame for him sell
and them, lie is more desirable as
a husband than any of the members
of the other lot above mentioned,
but will the girl who has shown hoi

No. Then see bow easy it is for Uu
young woman to find herself in con.
promising circumstances, impossible
bo explain in her fayor, causing i t .
ers to look at her with whispered
words anil a shake of tho head. Lei
us advise that more care be exercised
in the training of t ;e young men
and women. Train t..e young men
l) think of other things as well as
making themselves agreeablo to all
of the pretty young women of their
community. Why should they think
of nothing except spending all that
they can make in their effort to appear
generous in tho eyes of the
young ladies? Why should their
days and nights be spent in trying
to amuse some young lady that the>

or hand train the young lady t > be
very sparing with the smiles and
other favors that she holds oil.
Teach her that there is a pleasure
and a profit in being reserved and
withholding those things which mc n
i really do not pri/.j so highly when
once thoy havh obtained then .
i Teach theui that thoir lives must be
lived along linos which insure that
' no hint of scandal will ever mar ii.
? Show them bhatitis the worst o!
1 folly to look upon all young men as
i their friends just bocause they hap
en to be agreeablo and pleasant, ar d
because they seem to he willing to
> grant every wish. Treat then:
. everyone with suspicion, for at leaf t
s the inborn carelessness and thought
I tessnoss of most young men, if not
' their hard-down meanness, will
1 sooner or later get a girl into trou
ble even where she does not deserve
i it, and but littlo expects it. This
does not mean that all men arc bad.
J But look upon them as such until
thoroughly convinced that they arc
i rut, and you are bound to bo safe
through every thing.
