THURSDAY, SEPT. 11th., 1913.
The high prices realized for the
tobacco crop this year will stimulate
the planting of tobacco next year by
farmers who have never tried it as
a money crop. Conway has proved
herself a good market for leaf tobacco,
and the increased acreage of
next year will no doubt tend to the
benefit of the town. Therefore the
business should encouratre tho farm
ers in various ways.
* *
*
Wo waut to seo tho farmors of
Horry get into a lively contest to
seo which can produce the bost
erop9. During tho rush of the to
bacco season this your, the Herald
published each week the names of
the farmers making the best sales
at the three warehouses of tho Conway
market. Many other farmers
brought in the figures whonever
they iho ught their sales deserved
mention. Make it a rule to produce
the very best of everything.

The work that was done several
years ago in the laying of cement
sidew alks in the residence section o*
Conway still remains as a mark of
progress. When that work had
been accomplished the need o extending
the work tj theentiro section
or larger portions of it was
seen and it is still felt. It is hoped
that the town authorilies will see
a way t.n go on with tho work. By
adding a litt'e every year, it is possible
to have these walks all over
Con way.

There is a constant warfare going
on in all sections of this State
betweon the members of the law
and order leagues, and the otlicers
of the law, on the one side; and the
blindtigers and their sympathizers
on tije other. Recently many warrants
making charges and countor
charges against men and women in
the Qurley section of this county
were brought up for hearing before
Magistrate Jenroito. The preliml- !
nary hearings were waived in all of \
the cases and they will no doubt be |
aired in the criminal court at its '
next session, It is the old light
that is always being made. It is no
doutt the reason that some people
favor high license as the best solu- r
Hon of the whiskey problem. u
if \
It is best to act in important af 1
fairs, only after careful thought and
investigation. The man who could 1
act and not ni^ke a mistake, only
on the impulse of the moment, and
not from calm judgment, not there
by chance or luck. Rather than i
commit some act which may place
on tho actor a burden that lie will
near t > his grave, it is bettor to
take time for sober reflection.

So far as we can learn tho sand
hills of llorry County have maintain
ed their reputation this year and
have produced for their owners
some of the best crops thai can be
found in Horry County to-day.
Some years ago tho sandhill was not
rogarded as being land of much
value. To-day it is prv.cd highly.
Often they produce the very highest
grade of leaf tobacco, and cvon when
.O... 1 ~ 1 ! - - - . 1 i
i;iauiuu in cuuun anu corn and
sugar cane, and are given tho right
sort of cultivation abundant crops
are produced. It is a matter of
knowing how. In timo gone by, the
people had not learned how to cultivate
tho crops they plai t^d on the
sandhills. Experience has taught
them what they wanted to know.

Ore mistake often made in our
opinion in the expenditure of funds
provided by the public a ulhority for
tho building and maintaining of
public roads, is the skipping abon'
too much from place to plaeo within
'the county, doing a little here and
a little thoro, and not enough to
place any particular joint of road in
first class condition and repair. By
building the. roads well wherever
gone over, and never leaving one
oad section until it is converted in
to a very good road, is tho only
right way to go about it, and this
plan would linally result in good
roads all over tde county. While
there is no large amount provided in
any one yeac to accomplish better
roads, still there isa certain amount
sot aside every year out of the fundraised
by taxation. The error as
we see it is in spending this in little
amounts widely scattered, in an
olTort on the part of the board to
treat all sections of the county
aliko. If the county were to work
iho ontire time of a year in one cei tair
township, the people in tho
other townships might com plain,
and it may be this fear of complaint,
that may have caused the practice
during tho past years of scattering
what little money there is for those
purposes over tho entire county,
repairing a small ground bridge
here, and opening a new piece ol
road there. The way to do it-, m
believe, is to select the worst section
of road in the county. Then place,
all of the money and the bands
there and work on it to the best
advantage until it becomes as good
as is wanted. Then nio\e on to
another bad section, the next worst
in the opinion of the officers, and
stay with this and work it as much
as is needed, and strive to connect
up tho good sections of tho county
roads, by putting tho bad sections
in perfect condition and repair.
There is no doubt but that this plan
in the Ion# run would result in ^ocd
roads. It is a serious error to fritter
away what little there is in try
ing to do more with it than it can
po&sibly do, and instead of one
K ood job that will endure for all
.
uime, t ne result presents a hundred
little jobs badly done and which .
will not last.

DRUGGIST GIVES MONEY BACK

Dodson's Liver Tone Gets a Four v
Square Guarantee from Norton
Drug Store.
Whnn an article is sold a druggist
who is willing to give it his p r.sonal
guarantee, it's a mighty strong
proof of real merit.
That's exuet'y the case with Dod- \
son's Liver Tone. Its a pleasant
tasting, vegetable remedy for a slow j
and sluggish liver. Since Dodson's
Liver Tone came on the market toe 1
sale of calomel has gone way down
The reason is simply this: Dolson's
Liver Tone is safe and harmless and
guaranteed to be satisfactory -Calomel
is often uncertain, sometimes
dangerous, and no druggist wants
to guarantee that it won t knock you (
out of a day'8 work and maybe need
you to bed.
Norton Dreg Co., sells Dodson's
Liver Tone and guarantees it. For
you and for your children, ic'a a
good thing t y keep a bot'-le always
in the house.
"Norton Drug Co., will give you (
