Sime days ago a petition was circulated
among the people of the
town addressed to the town and
county authorities, praying that
some action bo taken to stop the
operations of a diye of mulatto
women who the petition stated had
moved to a house just outside the
corporate limits.
The petition stated facts, which
if true, make it imperative that
the authorties mentioned shall interfere
to havo the parties punished
and run out of the town. It appears
that their conduct with those who j
patronize them mostly white men
and boys, is enough to create disgust
in the minds of all who are on
the side of morals and common decency.
The dives of vico having
been broken up in many of tho cities
in this State, by means of the crusade
directed against them, as well
as in tho towns and cities of North
Carolina, tho inmates have lied to

Those who are referred to in the
petition are supposed to have been
run away from Wilmington, N. C.
The petition had many s'gners,
and it was said that it would be
* presented to the authorities the
first of this week, Just what action
will bo taken by theui ou the petiv
# tion is not known, but as a general
r4 rule the authorities here will act
w hen called upon and the necessity
of action is pointed out to them
They will no doubt see that these
vile creatures are ousted.
It is to be deplored that it is in
the power of such people to coriupt
the morals of white men and boys,
but according to the petition, and
the reliable information upon which
it seems to be based, such has been
the case to more or less extent.
The men who patronize such places
are as low as the inmates, but the
law does not undertake to punish
them.

Crops are very good through here,

The people through this section
have had lots of talk of making a
new county, with Pelham as County
seat, taking some of Mitchell, Colquitt,
Thomas and Grady county to
form Hansell county, which if granted
will be cne among the best counties
in this state. We crackers are
hurrahing for Bansell County.
Farmers are getting busy here
picking cotton and the gins have
commenced to hum, so it sounds
good to farmers.
The ice man has a good time these
hot days.

In tho Town court last Monday
morning the jury failed to agree in
the trial of H. W. Lewis, who was
charged with disorderly conduct,
reckless driving an automobile, and
exceeding tho speed limit with said
automobile The testimony v.'as to

Injured Man Drought to Huriought
Infirmary on Suuday Night, Died
few Hours After,--The Motor Car,
Jumped Track When Cow was
Struck.
George Tompkins, a son of Ithej
Tompkins, died at the Burroughs
1 atirmary last Monday morning at
3 o'clock, from injuries received by
him when run over by a motor car
at Caunon's Crossing. He was
brought to the infirmary at 11 o'clock,
but his injuries wero such
that nothing was possiblo to say^
his life.
The car had a gasoline rig by
which it was propelled. It was in
charge of Moses iirown thn soot.inn
foreman. lie and others were tak
ing a rido on Sunday ni^ht, George
Tompkins in the number. When
near Stlem church, or Cannon's
Crossing, a cow ran upon the track.
The car struck the cow and jumpod
the rails. George Tompkins was
the only one in the number that
tried to leave the ear. In his haste
ho jumped down 011 the track ahcaei
of the car and the whools passed
over his chest crushing it in. This
injury caused his death a fow hours
later. He was brought to the infirmary
by the section master.

In charge of L R Amrbose, and
experienced road builder, a force of
bands and sixteen mules went to
work this week on the public road
between this point and Galivants
Ferry, the work beginning jast beyond
Homwocd. The use of the
mules was donated by L 1) McGrath
of the Wood Products Co., that
j plant having shut down indefinitely,
, and the mules being idle in the
meantime. The road machinery of
' Horry County will be used in the
, work, and the work is expected to
j continue for a period of from six
? to eight months, until there is a
good highway all of the way from
Conway to Galivants Ferry, as can
be found in the country. Tne mules
of the farmers along the way will
also be used in the work, and any
hands that may be furnished by any
1 of the cit'zins The work jujt now
is being carried by private subscription,
and anyone who wishes
to donate anything to this great
work wiil be expected to send it in
without delay.
