MANY CASES, ONE DEATH
Wife of the Station Agent had Severe
Case, Hut has Recovered,--One Death
at Gurley, and One Patient Moving
Away has Since Died,?Cause Supposed
to be Drinking Water of Surface
Nature.
Reports have only recently reached
Conway of the ep'demic of typhoid
fever which seems to have
broke out at Gurley, S. C,, several
weeks ago, and which has been raging
eyer since, causing two deaths
and many serious illnesses. Those
who were attacked by the fever are
Don Prince, Mrs H, W. Mishoo,
Alon/.o Martin and wife, William
Tyler, Leroy Tyler, aud his wife,
Otto Stroud, Hubert Anderson and
a sister of Hubert Anderson, and
there are said to be other cases
whose names were unkown to the
reporter.
Mrs H. W. Miahoe had a severe
case of the feyer, but at last accounts
she was rapidly recovering.
Mrs R. L, Sullivan, a daughter of
Mr, and Mrs. H. \V. Mishoe went to
see her moth?r to take care of her
during her illness, and as a result
Mrs, Sullivan was taken sick and
lost her etiild in consequence of her
illness. Mrs. Sullivan's case was
not however diagnosed as typhoid
fever, but was of another type.
^ Messrs. Otto Stroud and Hubert
Anderson are at the infirmary of
Dr. H. H. Burroughs here. A lady
whose name was not given, it was]
said took the fevir while at Gurley,
and moved away, the illness proving
fatal to hee since that time.
Mrs. Hamp Gore who was taken,
sick with the feyer also died.
It is said that the suiface water
from tne pumps and open wells is
evidently the source of the typhoid
germs, and it has been suggested
that the State Board of health
should at once take this matter in
hand and ascertain if possible the
causes leading to the polution of the
drinking water at that place. The
cases are being attended by physicians
from Loris and from Conway.

Last week N. E. Horn collected
from the Atlantic Coast Line Rail

ney for Mr. Horn one day last week

J. P. WILLIAMS DEAD
Noted Capitalist Who Started Career
in Horry Dies in Atlanta.
J. P. Williams, a well known bus
iness man and capitalist of the State
of Georgia, died in Atlanta on August
5th at an advanced age, aftor
suffering for several yeirs "from a
form of insanity which had rendered
him incapable during his last years
of attending to business affairs, lie
is remembered by many of our older
citizens because it was in Horry
County that he started a great business
careor without a penny or
means of any kind to start it with.
He graduated at the University of
Virninia and entered service in the
Confederate war as Captain at the
age of about 20 years.
Immediately after the war, perhaps
about 1808, he came to Conway
penniless and was engaged as a boon
keeper by James S, Burroughs. The
next year he kept books for Beaty &
Hollidav, at Cool Springs. Abjut
the next year ho engaged in a timber
business of his own at Cool
Springs, and not very long after
that established a mercantile business
at Port Harrelson where a
large business was conducted by
him until 1880, when he sold out at
that place and moved to Georgia.
At the time he sold out and moved
away he had accumulated $50,000.00
in money and securities. Since lie
moved to Georgia his estate has at
various times been estimated at
twenty million. Whether he owned
all of this at the ti me of his death
or not, wo are not informed He
owned a railroad which ho built and
established, running fr^m Georgia
into Florida and which he operated
in opposition to another Company,
and for which he was ollered at one
time by his opponents tho sum of
seven million.
When ho first moved to Savannah,
Ga., he was a partuer with George
Watson. After that this partnership
was dissolved and he was in
business for a time with a Mr, Carson,
and it was with him that he
next incorporated the J P. Wil
liams Company, with a capital stock

Company for a number of years,
His exact ago is not known here
except that he was nearly, if not i
little more than 80 years of age a
the time of his death. He is surviv
ed by his wife, who was a Miss Tay
lor and who has been a life long in
valid. She was born in Horry Coui
ty on the plantation then and eve
since known as "Tampico" in Doj
Bluff Township about ten miles froL

Adrian On Saturday Night
DOCK LEWIS WHS CUT
Three Boys was Placed in Jail on Serious
Charges Growing out of Affray
on Saturday Night,--Kelley Tompkins
and George Tompkins Attacked
at Store,--Sheriff Arrests Defendants
on Saturday Night.
The sheriff had a hasty message
late last Saturday to come to Adrian
and arrest throe boys by name,
Gleaton Sessions, Frank Anderson
and Jim Anderson, who had in the
afternoon of Saturday severely cut
Dock Tie wis in face and under the
arm, and lator going to Adrian, !
they had a difficulty with George
Tompkins and Kelley Tompkins, the
latter claiming to have been shot
and run out of his store. Just what
led up to the trouble was not related,
but the sheriff left with a deputy
and after midnight placed the
defendants under arrest, after finding
them asleep in and old shed a
Howell's Siding. Dock Lewis was
brought to Conway for medical attention
and was so weak from shock
and loss of blo^d that he could not
b8 taken back home.
Dock Lewis, it is said, received
more than one very dangerous
wound, tnd the sheriff and magistrate
were asked not to grant bail
until Lewis is pronounced out of
danger. At Adrian it was reported
that one of the defendants had a
shot gun, another a pistol, and still
another a club.

warehouses of the Conway markot
for the week ending with Thursday,
August 7th, shows that 4h"1 uniform
high prices with which the season j
opened arc still being obtained by
those farmers who succeeded in raising
a crop of any fairly good quality
at all. The increased amount of w
tobacco being sold this year over
that of prcyious years shows, per
haps, two things; one, that the
acreage has been increased.aud more
farmers are planting this crop; two,
that farmers who formerly sold their
product at markets outside of Horry ,
County are this year selling it at
home. With the lively market that .
Conway now has, there is no reason
j why every leaf raised in the County
should not be sold on tho warehouse
