E Ilardee ia Well Known at* Merchant Some Miles Out of Town,--Witnesses Could not Teaiify That Drink was Intoxicating,?Case Heard by Magistrate J. P. Core. On last Friday Magistrate J. P. Gjre held a preliminary hearing at the court house here in the case brought by W. W. Graham against W. E. Ilardee, charging in the warrant that the defendant had sold intoxicating liquors. The defendant is a well known merchant who has been running a general merchandise store on the public road some miles out of Conway on the wav to Ham moud and not far from the place where the roads fork, one fork leading to Reaves' Ferry on the Waccamaw River. TLe dtfcrdant had many friends vl.o suimd interested iu the case and the #raud jury room where the heaiing tcik place was well crowed during the trial. The warrant had originally been taken out before Magistrate W. H Chestnut, and the case was later transferred to Mr. Gore. A number of witnesses were called. It appeared from the testimony that the Messrs. Graham had asked Mr. Hardee not to sell any cider to a certain individual TLat Mr Hardee had explained that the person in question would take it, or had taken it, although he refused to sell it to him. It also appeared that the iudividual in question had obtained whiskey elsewhere, and the implication was that the cider was used as a chaser for the ardent spirits Several witnesses produced by the State said that they had tasted the cider, and one hcd taken about a quart of it at ono time, but he could not say that it would make him drunk. Others Stated that they had seen people at the place who were under the influence of liquor, but they could not say that the cider did it. or that they got it there, end it also appeared that the store is not far from tLe lumber camps, and that the bands traded there, and one witnes said that he saw drinkingand drunkenes* at other places and he had no idea where the drinks came from. The magistrate held that there was no testimony sufficient to sena trie case to the higher court and on that ground dismissed the case. First Sunday Excursion. On last Sunday the first Sunday excursion of the season was run from Chadbourn to Myrtle Beach. There were four passenger coaches in the train, but as the ruoning of \ *? ?*,4i ? Ij id tuiti bee tine weil kuowr. among the people, there was only about one hundred who went over, including those getting aboard at Conway. Everything passed off quietly. There was a good dinner for all at the Sea Side Inn, where the proprietor, G. Marshall Nance as usual made it pleasant for the guests. Children's Day. The annual Children's Day exercises at the Methodist Church last Sunday were very interesting. A large congregation was present. Q lite a number of tha children anH j-uug people took part In the program. The singing and recitations were all fine. Dr E. Norton, the superintendent of the Methodist Sunday School presided. Miss Mabel Norton was organist. Mrs AO Thompson and Mrs J S Battle with the help of some otherc trained the children Unfortunately the rainy weather last week prevented as thorough training as was desired, but ic spite of that the chiidren have scarcely over done better. The decorations were beautiful. Tug Children's Day banner which was won by the Conway Methodist Sunday School last year over thei 800 Methodist Sunday Schools in 4hl8 state, was prominently display* - ^d. Approaching Marriage The many friends of Dr. D, T. Riley, fojrmerly connected with the Norton Drug Co , of Conway, will be pleased to know that invitations have been issued to his wedding. The bride to be is Miss Josie Mc Bride, the charming daughter of Mr. and Mrs James B. McBride of Florence, S. C,, and the wedding will take place at the First Baptist Church of that city at six o'clock on June 25th. Dr. Riley is very pleas autly remembered by many people here who learned to know him while he was connected with the Norton Drug Co. Prof S C Dusenbury who is at present a law studeut at the University of South Carolina, returned home Thursday to spend his vacation. Mr Carl Dusenbury has accepted a position with Noiton Drug Company. Carl is a br.ght young man and we wish for him much success. There seems to bo a great deal of speculation as to who will be outUnited States Senator, Senator E D Smith, probably will stand for re elec tion, and it is a known tact thai Gov Cole Blease, wants the job, and the many friends of Hon H iJ Scarborough, are urging him to make the race. Former Governor John Gary Evans, and Ma^or John P Grace, of Charleston may also be in the race. Now the question is who will go in the second primary? Gov Blease will probably get a plurality of the votes cast, with Scarbjrough or Smith a possibility for the second while the Candida ;y of Messrs Grace, Evans and Stevenson will not be takeQ seriously. Mr and Mrs W L Bryan reoently moved into their new residence just completed on the site whore the old building of the Burroughs Graded School was destroyed some years ago. ft is a handsome building and nicely situated. , ' The town passed the usual license ordinance reoently and raised uearly all of the licenses for conduct ing business in the town. More funds are evidently needed, and the property tax has been placed as high as it is possible to do under the laws. This new timber as well as what they already owned will be cut into lumber at the large plants just across Little River, where the 1 company has been operating for the past ten years or more. Death visited the home of Mr. and Mrs. S L. Owens on June 11th aud took their little son, VVioford. His sickness lasted for only a ,fcy/ days. Everything was done thai seemed possible to save his life. II3 was born on October 23rd, 11)1 i. Ho was one year and seven months and nineteen days old.
