THURSDAY, JUNE 5th, 1913. (
There is ao ordinance and health (
regulation of this town prohibiting ,
the sale of sweels, fresh meats, and (
other things intended to be eaten, (
during the warm season, except f
from behind screens or fly proof re- \
ceptacles. It is one of the best re- 2
quirements ever made in any town. <
So far as we have been able to ob- t
aerve there are none of our grocery- <
men or merchants who tight this or- j
dlnance, but on the other hand they 1
no doubt believe it to be a good 1
thing and they are willing to com- 2
ply with it. What we fear is that I
some of them may neglect to keep i
up the requirements, and getting 1
careless about the way their com- <
modities are handled will allow them 1
to become exposed more and more I
as the Summer advances. For this i
reason it is important that the en- <
forcement of the regulations be con- <
stantly looked after, and regular re- '
ports made if necessiry. Some cases <
of typhoid fever a few years ago, i
and perhaps those of last year, were (
directly tracable to the condition of 1
the business portion of Conway, and 1
of course if the germs were eaten in i
food that originally came from that 1
portion of the town, the food became i
contaminated from the fact that it c
had been exposed to flies. It is a i
safe rule to be careful at this season \
tf the year and eat n Hhing that has *
likely been exposed to house flies, j
urt t Knit f ft 4 h*- ?? * - 1 '
mvuvu.1 uisi uraiiiog 10 sucti an ex* a
teut that any germs of fever it may a
contain will certainly be killed In c
Charleston, S. C., there was an or- p
dinaDce recently passed requiring t
every loaf of bread sold by the baker v
ies to be wrapped in paper while hot t
from the oven and fixed so that it U
would be protected from that time t
until it was taken to the table to be tl
eaten. Tbia shows the extent to e;
which the ht u<e fly peril in typhoid o
fever has been studied with the view tl
of preventing the calamity that he ft

fo
It is hard to understand whv
J tl
some men will depart from the nargr
row vrn" and take the broad which
they ki.cw leads downward to de- m
struction. The recent newspaper X
items have informed the peep e, 1
specially the acquaintances of ? pj
L Moore concerning the! recett if 1
ret
troubles that have come to him by C*
reason of giving checks drawn on a
bank where the cheoke were turned o f
town on acoount of no funds. His
c
friends remember him as an industrious
farmer living with his family
cm a little farm near Allou, S. C.
He had spent years of toil in clear- x
ing the land and improving it. Ho c
had a comfortable house. He was
apparently doing well and making a '
good living. The land is among the ]
best in this section of Horry County.
Why be should have decided to leave <
all this that he had produced by his '
labor, it is more than we are aole t)
explain, but leave it ho did. lie ,
went to Geo-getown last Winter
moving his family there and rented t
ih? old central hotel on Front
Street. He started into the businc
ass of keeping a hotel. About the t
time that he opened this boarding c
bouse and needed new furniture and
supplies with which to conduct this
<3
business, his troubles began. Sev- t
sral checks were then issued by him :
to various parties there in payment v
3f rent and furniture. The checks 1
were drawu on the 1st National
Bank of Conway, and it appears .
that as fast as the checks were pre- 1
sented her? for payment at the bank, .
just that often they were refused a
payment, As a result several warrants
were taken out before Magistrate
Butler in Georgetown for his c
arrest under the recent statute pass 1
sd by the Legislature making it a t
misdemeanor to draw checks or 11
3rafts against a person or a bank
where there ar? no funds to meet
[
these papers Even after this first -j
trouble, after he had been taken un- \
ier the warrants and made bond, 3
the news items stated that other
checks had been issued and in like ^
uanner tumtd down, and on these r
J
ether warrants were taken out with D
>ut delay. To make a rather long r
itory short, he was finally taken by j|
the sheriff at Jacksonville, N. C., V
ind carried back to Georgetown
where he was called to trial on one C
ef the checks, pleaded guilty to the !'
v
charge, asked the mercy of the court, d
ind was sentenced to thirty days on ?
ihe chain gang. All this is bad read a
Ing for those who knew E. L. Moore s
18 an industrious and substantial i<
farmer. It is obvious that he made ^
\ mistake to quit the little farm and c
Lry to engage in a new business of
which he knew nothing, and for
which he no doubt had insufficient s
funds. He made the same mistake
that many a man has made to our
certain krowledge. There are difficulties
about every business in the i
world. When a man builds a house
jn a piece of woods land, clears
tround it in the course of a number
if years, a plantation which he h&s
fertilized and improved during the
lime, be has invested his capital in
t, which is h's muscle mostly, and
le makes a serious mistake to leave
t and go to something else. Because
those years he has spent in
naking this place for himself have
massed and gone out of his life. They
will never return, and it will take
ust as long to make a place for him
elf in anything else he may try. As t|
tated above, difficulties arise in any I
ailing. One who is engaged in a 1
articular calling, sees only the j|
roubles that arise in that particular M
rork. He loses sight of the fact I
hat he will find just as bad obstac- 8
is in any business or work he may V
ry. Every man is disposed to I
Ll_1. JL-J <1 - ...
[iinu inai me otner fellow has tbe I
asy job, and that bis own it the
ly hard one. It was this mistake 1
lat E L. Moore made, and oyery 1
irrner or any other man who is es
fcblished in his work ' and business
ad quits it to try something else
?r which he is not fitted will make ~
