Now that the season of the strawberry
and the irish potato has ari
rived in our midst, there is no rea1

The irish potato crop, which for a
long time looked so promising, acf
cording to recent reports made to
1 this oflice, has been cut off about
t one half by means of the extremely
t dry weather. It appears that a few
t neighborhoods had a raio when
s others did not, and in those sections
b where the shower fell, the crop is
1 very much better than at other
0 places. The rain which came last
t Friday was a little too late to do any

e The carnival shows arriving in
Q Conway on Monday before last for
* one week apparently did a good business
every night last week. There
,8 were two shows connected with it,
aside from the usual small stands
and exhibitions usually going with
such organizations, but these seemed
to enjoy a pretty good patronage
every night in the week. The Merry-Go-Round
especially was busy,
II not only at night but during the enp#
tire afternoons. There were not so
* many things going on as usual, not
exactly gambling, but the nearest
r, approach to it possible without vio
lating the technical spirit of the
n law.

I'he E L Moore Matter Comes up
Again.
E. L Moore, who was taken from
the jail here last week and carried
to Georgetown, by special oflieor It.
T, Harmon, was lodged in the
Georgetown jail upon his arrival
there, as he could not make bond for
his appearance at court under the
various charges lodged against him
in the court of Magistrate J. M.
Butler.
It appears that Moore has drawn
other worthless checks since his ar
rest under charges growing out of
worthless checks passed by him in
his Central Hotel deal. In relation
to the (irst chargo against him, he
made bond in Conway, and left here
for Chadbourr. Unnaining in Chad
bourn for a few days, he went to
Florence where he drew a check on
the 1st National Bank of Conway for
$75 00 and induced a merchant to
giyo him the cash for it. After re
maining in Florence a day or two he
went back toChadbourn, and finally
went to Jacksonville, N C., where
ho was arrested this last time. The
various checks given by him lately
and which wore worthless, are as
follows: Phoenix Furniture Co.,
$20.00; Ed Joseph, $75 00; T. W.
Barfield, $0.00; Mills of the Santee

trial in that county in June.

Farmers seems to be iu good heart,
Although the weathor is unusually
dry, and I fear the stand of crops
will be very broken. I am sure if
the farmers would unite into Drainage
Leagues as the town and some
of the country people are doing, and
put in a thorough draining system,
with the help of Stale and National
Aids, our crops would not sufTer so
much from drouths and drowned
outs, as prevails under present circumstances.
I am sure glad to
know that tha Socasteo Drainage
League is still alive, and will be
established, and will start the work
of reclaiming in Horry, which will
be the instigation of draining the
vast areas of tho so called swamp

Thus greatly promoting our agricultural
possibilities. Nearly two
years ago I started to establish a
drainage league in Deg Bluff and
Galivants Ferry, but it was defeated
by the hands of careless and in
different people, which every right
thinking man must say was to our
hurt. For no one. individual can
successfully drain his farm without
the corporative help of his neigh
bois. Iam also very interested in
road building, and am in favor of
doing it by the Bond Issue. But,
however, if each land owner would
bear one half the expense of ditching
and rounding up the roads where
it crosses their land, and the county
would do the other one half. It
would be a paying proposition for
the land owners and greatly benefit
the country roads. Space forbids a
thorough discussion of the waste of
time and means by working poorly
drained fields and roads, and will
8top by making a few remarks as
to the improvemen t of farm situ
tion conditions and rural 1 fe i 1 ge eral
by co operative organizations
along all lines of business ana especially
that of agricultural drain

Athletic Club.
E. Haggei, the proprietor of tho
moving picture show, is now at work
in the interest of an athletic club
which ho proposes to form, and
which he will run without profit and
the members will have to pay only
actual expenses. He will teach all
of the forms of athletic exercise,
such as wrestling, boxing and calesthenics.
We were mistaken in stating that
E. Haggei is a Syrian. He is an
Arabian.

year will be in charge of Vivian F.
l'latt, who made quite a reputation
there last year for the up-to date
manner in which he conducted affairs.
Viviau has added a number

of the guests this season. New

been taken up and a new one put
