One little improvement in some ,
process used in a great industry, (
though small and insignificant look- (
lug, has changed the output in j
many cases to the extent of millions, i
And there are still just as great ,
things waiting to be discovered as ,
any of those brought out before this. ,

There is nothing of value that can
be attained without labor of some
kind. The more you do the more i
you may expect to have to suffer in i
tie doing, and the more labor and
trouble there is required, the great- i
er will be the reward. This is one i
thought that should sustain one <
when bowed down with the tvials 1
that come in this life. ]
* * * <
Jiivery new movement in a town is
sure to have its enemies. No matter '
how much it may be inteudod to 1
benefit the 'people as a whole, there 1
will be those who are ready to 1
question the motives of others, and ?
to do everything in their power to v
tear down as fast as the others build, r
if they can. c
* * c
*
The Herald is in love with each ^
one of the movements lately put on C
foot at Con way, such as the civic 5
league, and the fair association, and t
it is not only willing but extremely
ttnxious to help all that it can in >
each of them. If tho Herald can do E
you a favor along any of these lines
do rot hesitate, for we will be ready |
HAnd perfectly willing to render such |
jMssistance as we can.

Nature can not alway be harnessed
by man. Buildings will topple
and dams will break in spite of human
ingenuity, but that Fedoral
Government and the various States
might have been better prepared to
save life and property as a result of
the recent Hoods resulting from the
bieayy rainfall in the Middle West, is
evident to every student of the
Waterways problem It is useles
:o talk of bridging the ocean or of
emulating by law the yolume ol
aiDfall, but it is wholly within the
jower of the Federal Government
ind of the States, to build adequate
vaterways for the carriage of the
lateral or even the abnormal flow
>f water, and to erect levees or
ither controlling works, and it is

THE UPWARD LIFT
The tendency of tho present day
s to look upward always and never
lownward. Wo make this statment
n the face of the allegations laid
[own by many to the effect that the
vorld is gradually growing worse in
ome respects. It has been wisely
aid that the way to judge the fuure
is by the past. Taking the
listory of this world on the whole
ad considering it generally from
he beginning of time until the
iresent day, the gradual tendency
f man intellectually, physically and
piritually, has certainly been up/aid.
The present is bound to be
a some respects like the past, ar.d
udging by the past, we are prepari
to say that at the present time
he tendency of everything is up
vard and not dowuward. In eyery
ralk of life we find men striving to
.ttain higher and better results in
he very same things that men have
>een doing for thousands of years.
>ome of them are forging so far
.head in the exercise of their time
md talent, that thoy are daily givng
to the world the benefits of
wonderful discoveries, thus almost
sontradicting the wise proverb of
blomon when ho said that there
vas nothing new under the sun.
?he man who is not trying to do his
>art in the upward trend of the
mman race fails entirely, in our
ipinioD, to carry out the purpose
or which he was created, of course

that small efTorts and small results j
obtained by the many amount in the

A witness warrant was sent here
last week to be served on witnesses
in a case pending against E L
Moore, la Georgetown, charged with
lrawing and uttering a worthless
jheck on the 1st Nai'i Bank of Conway.
Col. D A Spivey was also
wanted^a* a witness in relation to
what funds the defendant had in the
bank here at the time of passing tho
3 heck. The trial of the case seems
to have been set for last Saturday in
Gleorgetown, but as some of the witnesses
were not served in time, it is
likely that the trial had to be continued
until a later date.
