The people who are sticking to
f their job and spending their lives in
the up-building of the out-of-theT
way places in this section of our
country, are truly pioneers entitled ,
to just as much credit as our forefathers
who came over to fiis country
and blazed the first paths
>V through the virgin forests. In the
course of the last ten years these
modern pioneers have caused towns
to spring up and grow where there
was absolutely nothing when they
went there to begin operations.
Large manufacturing and other interests
have been established, the
farmers in the immediate community
have gained new inspiration,
e n 1 if ! ^
broadened tneir neias, anu are nviu#
happier lives as a result in many j
instances of one strong man, who
went into the wilds and made a
start and stuck to the job. We
like to think of such men and what
they have accomplished and are like
ly to accomplish in the history of the
eastern portion of South Carolina.
To us there is no more pleasant
thought, than the one that comes
to us when we view the present condition
of the country, and the conj
dition in which it was found ten to
fifteen years ago. Churches and
school houses stand now where
there was nothing to mark the modern
progress of improvement and
Christianity. The saw mill located,
in the heart of the pine forest have

Thi3 matter of improvement is
steadily going on and it will continue
because strong men are behind
the times, and they will stickto

headway not only for themselves,

It is not often that a cyclone visits
this section of South Carolina,
and even when they do they are not
often as extensive a s the one that
swept through Dog Bluff township
last week, making fifty-five people
homeless, and destroying their propl
^ erty so that the rest of the people
feel called upon to help them. As
compared to the cyclones striking
down in "the middle west almost
?very year, that in Dog Bluff last
week was a mere nothing. In the
west cyclones have frequently
wrecked whole cities and laid waste
whole counties in its path. That
in Dog Bluff was a fair sample of
what the elements are capable of
doing, and even though it was not
to be compared with the great
cyclones of the West, still the com
paratively few who suffered from it,
suffered nearly as much as any people
ever did from the ravages of the
wind, and they are entitled to every
cent that you arc* able to give in the
f: rebuilding of their homes and furni
ishing them the necessaries of life.

a misdemeamor to pass a check to i

of value, the drawer having at the ^

In every community there are two
classes of people constantly at work, '
one element trying to build up, j
making progress and improvement, j
the other trying to tear down and
ruu back vard all of the time. The [
opposing forces are not always even |
ly matched. Very often the build

only for them bub in favor of those
who opposed them.

Never guess at any important
fact where it is posiblo t3 be C3rtain.
Make it a rule to know what
you are about, remembering that it
is only necessary to guess where it !s
a practical impossibility to be sure*
And then make your conclusions
only after the use of calm judgment
and careful thought and investigation.

The 1'ttle difficulties arising now
and then over the few sewers in the
town are only gentle reminders that
the entire town is in need of water
works and a general sewer system
which would benefft not only the
few who might live on certain
streets, but practically every dweller
in Conway,

Some farmers who desire good
crops neglect to start right by <
planting good seed* To succeed in
anything one must start right at
the very beginning, and there is
nothing as important to the farmer
as preserving every year the very
best seed for his use in planting his
next year's crop.

Conway grows every year as a
strawberry shipping point. The
indications are that the acreage is
increased this year, and without
bad luck. the quantity shipped
this year will greatly exceed the
shipments last year.

Miss Attaway in Horry.
Miss Cleo Attaway, State Orgaui
zer for the South Carolina Woman's
Christian Temperance Union, who
is touring the eastern part of the
state in the interest of the organization,
spent the week ending March
17th in Horry. Her appointments
were Toddyille, Conway, Aynor,
Ucmewood, Loris and Oreen Sea.
Miss Attaway's subj 3Ct at Conway
was "The Wastefulness of the Liquor
Trallic," and was ably handled.
Her arguments wrr3 verified by a
sprinkling of statistics, but not so
many as to become tedious. Her
bearing is easy, her manner earnest,
her arraignment of the liquor traffic
convencing.
Twenty-four signatures to the
pledge were received at the close of
i the meeting, which promise increased
membership to the Conway Union.
A union was organized at Aynor,
The storm prevented the meeting at
Homewood and the later appoiut>

An informal reception at whioh
1 the members of the Conway Union
. and their friends bad the pleasure
of meeting Miss Attaway, was held
k at the home of Mrs C. H. Snider on
j last Wednesday, from four to five
o'clock.
