gtfrcg ?tart& Eitered at the Poet Office at Conway, 8. C aa Seoono Class Mai) Matter. PUBLISHED JBVERTTHURSDAY MORNING BY CONW> Y PUBLISHING CO. 8UB8JRIPTION ONE DOLLAR PER YEAR H, P. WOODWARD. Editor THURSDAY, MARCH, 13th, 1913. Id the oourse of a few years the great forests of Horry county will have disappeared from the face of the earth. For many years now the great lumber mills have been cn gaged in cutting up the pine trees, The forests baye been gradually growing thinner, many entirely gone. * * * With the decline of the pine forests of Horry county, fields of cotton, corn and tobacco will decorate the face of mother earth, and to the people there will certainly come a higher degree of progress and development. * * * The cooling breezes of Myrtle Beach will no doubt be sought more than ever this Summer. There is a number of cottages added to the list of year before last and the hotel it is said will be open on time for business. * # * As a general rule the criminal irakes a bold front, and when his punishment is inflicted, appears to treat it lightly, and a looker-on would say that at last he did not mind it much, though bis punishment was severe. But this is only as to outward appearances. If you oould look into his mind you would see that the criminal's most severe punishment is there, and not on the outside. * # * Before clearing more of your woods land it would be as well to see that what you already have unrlnv> lanno la f.V?r?rrvnf?Vil v imnrnvf'fl UCl ?V> VUVI V/U^utj V* w ? Lands to be tilled well, need to have all of the stumps taken out and all of the low places thoroughly drained, so that there is one unbroken field from one end to the other. When what you have under fence has been thoroughly improved as it should be, then see about moving out the fence and taking in more land. * * * Unkind things haye been said in the newspapers about Dr. Friedmann who claims to have discovered a cure for consumption. Among other things it was stated that he was mercenary and intended to give up the secret to the rest of the world only in exchauge for dollars. Several despatches haye appeared in the daily papers of the last week show ing that these statements must have been false. Ho has donated samples and shows every disposition to give the world the full benefit of his discovery, 1 W Keeping 5,1 One's dog* Self in * Good I self s Repair ?l By S. N. Situate at about the middle of Main Street, near the main residence section of the town and in plain view of the business houses and offices, it will be, when finished, a joy forever. Campbell, with a wife and grown children living in Columbia, made love to a Miss Small, a church organist in the same city and married her, go ing at once to Atlanta, Ga., without his crime being found out. She accompanied him to Atlanta, and the two were living in a cottage when the duplicity of the man was discovered by the father and took out a warrant for him. Thi3 mais said to be of pleasing address and I is skilled in the railroad accounting j business which he followed. It is a mystery how he could have a family living in the same city where he courted and married a young woman like Miss Small, without some knowledge of hi3 double life being found out by her or her relatives in time to prevent her ruin. It shows how prone some young women are these days to fall in love with any one-eyed scamp that happens to come along; and they never for one minute think of taking the precaution of investigating into the man's past life, his present standing in the community, his means of taking care of her, and his general reliability and strength of character Such affairs as that in Columbia which happened to the young organ ist, are indeed a lesson to any young girl who is courted by a strange man, whether young or old and comes forward with a proposition of marriage, Better take time and plenty of it to find out who he is and where he came from, who was his father and his mother, where are his sisters and his brothers, and what was his record all through his life from the cradle. A jroung lady cannot know too much of the man with whom she intends to keep com piny. So far as the Herald has been in formed, the matter of a county board stands where it did, which means that there is nothing doing, but still there may be in the near future. On Tuesday of last week the old board met at the Suparvis >r's office and paid some of the claims, including the salaries of County officers, chain gang, ana poor house expenses, an3 no other claims ware paid, it is said on ac count of lack of funds in the treas ury.
