' ^ 91* garag -c ? l Hie Poet Office at Conwiy, 8. C as Second Ciaee Mail Matter. PUBLISHED EVERY THURSDAY MORNING BY CONWAY PUBLISHING CO. ftORlPTION NE DOLLAR PER YEAR H. B WOODWARD; Ed I tor f r THURSDAY MARCH 6t h 1913 ; There is not a man in the town who will not help the dear ladies in I the strenuous efforts they are now making to beautify and clean up the place. Even the oldest bachelors will become enthusiastic over these matters. * * As a citizen of the State which you inhabit, be sure that you do your part toward leaving it better when you leave it. You owe this to the generations yet unborn. The record you make while here will no doubt determine vour standing to some extent in the hereafter which you have never tried, and which you cannot therefore afford to try withthe best preparation possible. * * * i For a long time consumption of i the lungs was considered as practically an incurable disease. It now appears that after long years of study and experimenting, a German physician has discovered a cure for the disease. He will endeavor to * win with it the one million dollars offered by a rich man of New York for the cure of 95 persons out of 100 patients suffering from the disease. There is hope indeed that cures will be discovered lor every disease known to the human family. It is believed that there are cures for all if only they can be discovered. * * * The crowds visiting the court house last week during the progress of the proceedings would seem to in dioate that more than the ordinary interest is now being felt in the ad" minisrtation of justice. The court room was packed to its utmost capacity during the three days the court remained in session. 04.LJ^.1 ^ ii. !/] i. ? il oiriun Miiouuuu was paici iu tuo n iai of the cases and on one or two occasions the audience showed its approval or disapproval of the results. * # * It is a fact that some people are afraid of a newspaper, although it may be only a small weekly sheet published at the county seat. Very often the criminal *hose case has been passed on in the court has been able to faoe the crowd in the court room without flinching, even accept ed his punishment without any show ofeither remorse or shame, but after this is all over, will ask the county paper to leave his name out of the cases disposed of, thus showf A. 1 A. 1 J J- A 1 LI! A ! ing mat ne ureaus me puoncauon of his guilt in the newspaper worse than the publicity of the court and the verdict of a jury of his peers. * * * One looking on at the proceedings of the courts, observing the prisononers as they are placed in the dock, charged with heinous crimes, their cases left to the jury, verdicts of guilty returned, and the sentences of the law inflicted by the judge, will wonder why it is that through a 1 of the ages, laws have been designed to prevent just this thing, and yet crime goes on from year's end to year's end, without ceasing, and the same old crimes are committed in the face of almost certain punishment; Judge Itice stated in his charge to the grand jury last week that there seemed to be an increase of late in the lawlessness displayed by the criminal element of this State. Just what is the cause of this condition he oould not or at least did not cay. One thing in our opinion that Irresponsible for the increase of orine, if in fact there is an increase, Jgtfeolaxness with which some of have been enforced by the juries and the courts, and the encouragement that the lawness element has received from people in high office. For it is well understood to all who have studied the subject, that the laws of the land can only restrain the commission of crime. The laws cannot stamp it out. But the manner of the enforcement of the laws and the infliction of the penalties has everything to do with the degree of restraint that is applied, and if properly enforced and I the guilty duly punished, the com I mission of crime will certainlv be reduced to its lowest possible minimum. There are problems connect , ed with this matter as of course with ^ all human institutionsi i # * I * Most people are inclined to won- I der at the remarkable discoveries j and inventions of the present day, ; and they say to themselyes ihat the limit has been reached, and that { there is nothing further to be discov j ered or invented that will be likely ^ to astonish the world. They are ' mistaken in this impression. Though | the inventions of the past and the i \ present and the discoveries in science ^ of the recent past are wonderful and astonishing to the greatest degree, there are still greater things to be uncovered and brought forth to the light of understanding by the gen-i 1 us and persevering applications of those who have the ability and the brains to look for them. The inven g tions of the past were just as well hidden as those still to be brought forth. When they were discovered they appeared very simple and easy to find. In the same way through the years of the future, when a man 8 has made a wonderful discovery or brought out some usefvl invention, ^ the people will marvel at the simplicity of the thing, and begin to a wonder why it was that others had j not found them before. We believe ? r ihat it is every man's duty to keep v looking for these things which will jj aid the human race in its fight to t uplift itself toward that perfection t of the Creator that has been the j dream of sages. You may say that this is a height to which it is impos i f sible to attain. It may be impossi- j ble. But the truth remains that it t i has been the aim of good men in all \ the history of the past, and so it will 1 in all of the ages to come, and just ^ as this aim succeeded in bettering . the worldly condition of mankind as a whole during the past, in much t greater ratio will it improve the hu- t man race during the future. * s J Best for Skin Diseases Nearly every skin disease yields rj quickly and permanently to BuckInn 'o A fn inn fial onfl nnfhinrt ifi I ICU O XX & LA IvUl UUWUlUg *0 better for burns or bruises.
