IRISH PO TATOES P LANTED
Many Farmers Have Gono Into This
Business This Year. Encourage
Obtained Last Year.
Last year the Myrtle B?ach farms
of Messrs. Burroughs & Collins Company
cleared on the Irish potato
crop the round sum of ten thousand
dollars. It is true that a large acreage
was planted from which this result
was obtained. But the facts
showed that there is money in this
orop when planted in the Horry
soils. This year hundreds of farmers
in this sectiop of the coonty
have planted from four to ten acres
of Irish potatoes and should the seasons
suit the crops, it is impossible
to estimate the vast amount that
will be shipped away from Conway
this year, and the large sum total
that will be realized for their sale*
Those who have planted have followed
directions uiven for seedinir
the lands. They have used the most
approved kinds of fertilizers. They
will no doubt carry out to tho letter
the instructions giveu for the
proper cultivation of the crop.
This being the case, without misfortune
in te matter of rains at the
proper time, there is no apparent I
reason why the farmers should not
make much money this year on this
to them, a new crop. The planting
of the potatoes has been encouraged
| by Mr. Dornin, who had charge of
a large farm at Burcol. He his had
a long experience in the raising of
irish potatoes and knows how to instruct
others in the planting and
cultivation of the crop.

in Conway for Long Time. *
On last Saturday and Saturday
night more than half a dczen persons
in Conway were made ill from
the effects of Ptomatine poisoning,
caused it is stated by eating pork
cheese, or souse, that had been prffc
pared and had stood in a shelf lined
with ztno, or cooked and placed
there to cool, not in contact with
the metal, but supposed to have
been in a warm pan which may have
heated the zinc, Several persons
including Misses Lunette JJurbago
| and George Johnson, employees at
the store of Messrs. .Burroughs &
Colli us Co., ate some of the meat
anflfwere ill, but soon recovered and
were out again. Mrs. F. A. Burroughs
was made ill by the poison
but was up in a short time. The
most ^rious case was that of Mr F.
A. Burroughs who suffered intensely
for several days the (irst^)f the
week, but was reported to bff^much
better and still improving yesterday.
Tho*souse was prepared in the ordinary
and usual wayi It is believed
that the meat became poisoned
by the action of the zinc lined shelve
unon which it was perhaps plac
ed to cool in the pantry*
This is the first case of the kind
reported here in some time. It is
something very little undeiatood by
the layman, though he sees the word
used in the newspapers quite frequently.
Ptomaine is any of a class
of organic bases of alkaloids formed
by the aotion of putrefacsive bacteria
on nitrogenous matter; a . putrefactive
alkaloid. Some ptomaines
are harmless, others are poisons
as those sometimes occufing to canned
meats, fish, etc. The exact
cause leading to it in any given case
are perhaps hard to understand by
even the doctors themselves. A per

f A COUNTY FAIR ASSOCIATION
I
Plans Will be Formulated and Carried

A meeting of citizens was called

The meeting was called on
rather short notice, and the attendance
was good considering this
short notice.
Col. D. A. Spiyey was elected as
chairman of the meeting, and Power

causidered thut the first thing to be
attended to is to formulate perm

Messrs. S. H. Brown, Charles Dusenbury,

Bethea, and Miss Ida Moore, as exoflieio
members, were appointed a3
a committee to draw up and formulate
these necessary plans and to
present these at a masa meeting of
citizens to bo called in tbo near future.
This enterprise has been needed *
for a long time here. Io has been
mentioned and talked of for a number
of years. At last a definite
step has been made, and those behind
the movement intend that it
shall go through. But they need
the advise aud help of every citizen
in the town and in the county. So
if you want a county fair, and you
certainly ought to if you do not already,
get in touch with*the movement
'now, and do your part towards
its permanent organization,
