On la9t Saturday evening just before
night, it was reported to Chief
Jj R. Amorose that a negro giving
his name as Robert Burrows, or
Burgess,, was soliciting orders on
\ no streets for sales; of bliud tiger
liquor, to be delivered to tho?e who
v*aut.;d to purchase upon leaving
too money with him. One white
man gave him the money for a pint
and when he delivered it, the negro
required twenty cents more. A

was ended by his taking the whiskey
back. Later two white men
g.;ve him $1 25 for which a quart
was to be delivered to thom. He
next met Mr.' John. Tompkins and
solicited him to purchase a quart.
Tompkins told Mr Ambrose about
his making the offer and the chief,
gave Tompkins a dollar and told
him to give it to the man, and see
vhere he got the whiskey, and then
bn-)g it to him at tho town hall for
evidence, Toxpkios gave tho negro
the money and went along with the
negro aud the other white men who
bad deposited the $1.25, the negro
y stating that ho would make delivery
on the back lot near the large
stables of Burroughs & Collins Co.
At that point ho stated that this
was only a ruse, and that the whi9k*/
was across the Kingston Lake
brd/e, and be would have to go
over there to make delivery. When
just across the lake bridge, he stated
that ho would go to the sbop of
Jake Henderson near the ship yard
and wait, ho would go another way
through the wocds and would meet
thorn at the shop and give them the
whiskey. Tompkins and the other
nan Charley Norris, went to the

come until one of them found him
knocking about the plant of the A.
M. Burroughs Lumber Company.
When he arrived at the shop he
still could not deliver the whiskey,
and the money was demanded, back
frnm him. He returned the $1 25
to Norris, and then beeamo violent
and threatened to kill him. Tomp1
ins did not got back the one dollar
he had paid him but came and
reported the matter to Chief Am.
brose, who sent Mr. W. S, McCaskill
to arrest the negro. When

Johnson at Forney on January
9th
The brilliant reception given by '
Mr and Mrs Italy W. Johnson in
their lovely new home at Forney,
on Thursday evening, January 9tb,
was by far the most delightful af
fair of the season.
The guests were met in the hall
bv Mr Johnson, giving every one a
welcome and a hearty handshake. -y
Then they were ushered in the reception
room where they were met
by Mrs Johnson, who in a very lovely
and entertaining way made the*
guest fdft at home. For a short
while the guest remained in the re- *
ception room and vere shown "The
Animals" by Misses Ella Dills and
Mayme Hendrix. From the reception
room thay entered the parlor
where a number of games were in- J
troluced by Misses liuth Hendrix f
and Myrtle Spivey.
At 10 o'clock "delicious refre'sh-?
ments were seryed in the diain^ I
room.

Monday morning. On Monday
morniug he was tried and couvicted
and sentenced to pay a fine of 4110
00 or servo three mouths on the
public works. He could not pay
the line and will work out his sentence
on the chain gang.
The shop of Jake Henderson is in
the midst of a number of negro teni
ant houses amoug which it is known
that rows frequently take place ani
cheap liquor 11 >ws freely. The
place has been watched for some
time and the authorities will try to
break it up.

of Conway for the fiscal year
Beginning October 1st 1912; By
Levying Ten Mills Upon Each
Dollar of The Taxable Property
of the Said Town.
BE IT ORDAINED by the
'layor and Wardens of the Town- of
Conway in Council Assembled: and

Sec 1. Tnat a tax of ten mills
ipon each dollar of the value of "all
>roperty as assessed for taxation
or Slate and County purposes and

See. 2 That the said tax shall be

March 1913 a penalty of fifteen percent
shall be added by the Clerk and
Treasurer of the Town; and the said
penalty snail be collected and receipt
id for as in said property tax.
Sec. 4 That all taxes and penalties
due and unpaid on the fifteenth
lay of March 1913 shall subject the |
properly of the taxpayer within the
Town of Conway; to execution and
sale undo.* the proyisions of the Sia
lutes of South Carolina; in such case
made and provided; and within ten
Jays after the first day of March ,
1913; the said Clerk and Treasurer j
shall issue his execution against each
delinquent taxpayer directed to the
Marshall of the Town of Codway for j

Sec. 5. The Marshall of the said
Tdwu shall promptly notify the said
delinquent taxpayers of the amount

shall make his levy and sale of

ecution shall be fifty cents; and the
