A Prominent Tobacco Man
Charged With Fraud
EVIDENCE NOT SUFFICIENT
Recently Mr. L. H. Burroughs Took
Out a Warrant for Mr. T. M. Fullerton,
Former Manager of the Farmer,
s Warehouse, Charging Him With
( Breach of Trust. At a Preliminary
' Hearing Before Magistrate Chestnut*
the Defendant Was Exonerated.
Magistrate W. H. Chestnut o
Tuesday of last week held a preliminary
hearing in the case of the
State vs. T. M. Fullerton, who was
charged in the warrant with breech
of trust with fraudulent intention.
This warrant had been sworn out
. gainst Mr. Fullerton by Mr. L. H.
Burroughs, the President of the
Farmer s Tobacco Warehouse Co.,
who conducted the tobacco business
at that warehouse last year, employed
Mr. Fullerton to manage it.
The testimony at the trial developed
an interesting situation, in regard
to $811.17, the proceeds of a
lot of leaf tobacco snipped by T. N.
Fullerton, Manager, to a warehouse
in Florence. S. C , for resale. The
warrant charged that the defendant
had mis-appropriated this lot of
tobacco as it had b?en purchased
with warehouse funds, and the proceeds
had not been returned. The
evidence showed thru the tobacco
had been bought /rom farmers in
thia county by a pin hooker n&med
Colo, who was using money of the
Farmer's Warehouse furnished by
Mr. Burroughs through Fullerton as
Manager. After the shipment went
to Florence, Cole wont to that city
with the ostensible purpose of helping
in the sale. Mr. Fullerton did
not trust him and wired th ? Warehouse
there to ruake th* check payable
under no circumstances to
C<?le. This check for $811.17 was
in fact made out to Fullerton, Manager,
as payee, ar.d delivered to
I '.Colo by the Warehouse in Florouce
after 1 he sale. On the way back
with this cheek Cole stopped at
MulJiuv and purchased a lot of tob
icco of Yarborough at that place
j and tendered payment with this
check of $811 17. Fie had no author
ity to endorse tho check but he
forced the endorsement of T N
Fuller! on, Manager, on the back
, (hereof and Yarborough gave him
1he deference bv giving him anoth
er check, Cole then came to Conway

check he had received from Yarbor\

ho had bought at Mullins in
settlement of the tirat chfmk. Fullorlon
refused to do this and informed
Mr. burroughs at the time Ho
wired the bank at Florence in time
to st< p the payment of the check
for $811 17, and that amount is tied
no there still and has bcon evor
si ?. e September. 1911, when all this
occcurred. The Magistrate dismissed
i he c.p o, as there was no proof of
fraudulent indent on the part of the
defendant. Colo doubtless made

Special to The State.
Longtown, Oct. 4.?A wedding
of unusual interest occurred at 6:30
o'clock Wednesday evening at the
R.dgeway Baptist church, when
Miss Leetbard Douglass Lewis and
William Lamar Bryan were united
in marriage. Rev. W. R. Pritchett
performed the ceremony in the presence
of many friends and relatives
"Love's Consolation," softly played,
suggested the approach of the
bridal party, and with the first
strains of Lohengrin's bridal chorus
came the four young ladies, Miss Ellie
Pickett and Mis** Eugenia Bigs
by, Miss Fred Reeves and Miss Maggie
Lewis, who acted in the double
capacity of ushers and bride's maids
The bride, entering with her maid
of honor, Miss Frances Lewis, was
met at the altar by the groom and
his best man. Dr. L. Roy Cates
Mendelsohn's wedding march was
played as the party left the church
The bride is the popular daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Lewis, of
Longtown.
The groom is the clerk of court of
Horry county.
Mr. and Mrs. Bryan left on the
evening train for Savannah, Jacksonville,

As stated, Mr. Brvan is the Clerk of
tbe Court of Common Plsas for this
County. He is one of the most efifi
cient and competent clerks the county
has ever had. and he wa9 re?ently
reelected to this position without
any opposition. Mrs. Bryan is a
charming and highly accomplished
young lady She taught last year
in the Burroughs School, where
she was lovod by her pupils They
will make their home at Conway.
Private Water Wprks.
At this time there areas ipany as
six private water work systems being
installed in residences in different
parts of the town. It is the
wonder of many < people who visit
Conway fcnat tha town does not
have public water works and sewetage
system lor the public benefit.
The town represont a large amount
of taxable property so far as actual
value is concerned, the tax rate is
unusually high for a town of its siip?,
and these a.re one or two of the rea
sous why it is a wonder that the
town itself could uot put in these
things. At this time nearly every
rosidsnce in Conway has a privatewater
and sewer system of its own.
Special- Notice.
Tha Epworth League will hold its*

Case Compromised.
An item in this paper last week
stated that the steamer Carolina
belonging to Mr. J. M McKeithan,
had been sunk near the wharf at
Thunderbolt, Fla,, and that Mr
McKeithan had entered two actions
against them for wilfully turning the
boat lose from the dock. Since last
week Mr. McKeithan's attorney in
Jacksonville has compromised the
case for $1,000 00 which has been
paid, but this will not more than
cover the expense of raising the
boat.
