IMPROVED FARMING METHODS.
In reference to the prosperity of
the farmtrs of Horry county, it will
bo remembered that in the early
part of the crop season of Ihe year
1911, the weather was very dry. i
The dry spell continued unbroken till
a majority of the farmers were dishearted
and frequently said they did
not expect te make half a crop. As
the season wore on, the rains finally
came, the crops came out and last
year saw the best corn and cotton
and potato crops for many years.
FCven the early tobacco crop was
cut short very little, and the farmers
were geuerally well satisfied, |
though complained about the low
price of tobacco last year. When
the corn had been gathered into the
barns and the cotton crop harvested
and marketed, there was not a
farmer in the county who refused
to rejoice over the blessings the dry
spell of the early sowing had brought
Ooming down to our reflections to
the present year, although at one
time things looked gloomy for the
farmers, yet the year has turned out
to be one of the best in ihe history
of Horry farming. Cenditions were
thought to be adverse when in fact
they were not. We argue from the
fact that the farmers of Horry
county seem to be able to succeed
*nd do well with their crops in the
face of the adverse circumstances of
the last few years, that the farmers
of late have been learning more and
more about the lands they cultivate
getting here and there bits of knowldge
which enable them to a more or
less degree to overcome what in the
aast were considered difficulties too
great to be overcome. The fact
vhat the farmers have succteded last
year and this, and also to some extent
for several years preceding,
shows beyond doubt that agriculture
has advanced in this courty by
leaps and bounds, and that It has
made groat progress in a very lim

lteri period or urae.
T: is known beyond dispute that
here are sandy lands in some parts
of thecounty, formerly considered at
worthless, which are now producing
every year heavy crop9 of corn, tobacco
and cotton. What is the secret
of it? The secret lies in the
knowledge the farmer of such lands
has acquired as to the proper ways
if cultivating them. The old methods
did not suit the sandy lands,
poor crops were the result. Lands
of this kind which formerly sold for
one dollar per acre, cannot be
bought today for ten dollars per
acre as to some of them, and none
of them we believe for less than
four. While the sand hill farmers
have been improving by using modern
methods, the farmers on the
stiff and clay soils have no less improved,
for we see better and better
crops on this kind of land as the
years go by.
Although much has been learned
by our farmers, and although 1hey
now stand far ahead of where they
did ten years ago, yst thers is still
more for them to learn, for they have
not yet done with Horry soils,
what it is easily possible for them
to do. They are only beginning
now in the march of progress.
There are counties in the State much
ahead of Horry in agricultural development,
None of such counties
are blessed with the same latural
advantages as Horry. Horry has
moro upon which to build. As

reason why it will not be continued,

movement for better roads. There

modern times. Let every cit'xen do
everything in his power to further
any good movement that comes
along locking to the building and J
improvement of the county roads.
