At. Conway Last Saturday,
With a Large Crowd
SPOKE AS USUAL
Abide From the Large Crowd, and the
Frequent Questions Asked the Candidates
by the Audience, There was
Little Difference in Tins ana utner
Meetings.
The County canvass by the candidates
for County offices, closed at
Conway last Saturday. That ruuch
interest was felt in the campaign, is
proven by the fact that there were
people in attendance from all ?ections
of the County, and there were
about twice or three times as many
If) hear the speakers as attended
the S.,ate cimpugn meeting earlier
in t he Summer.

There wore rrcqimui * ijueatiuua
put to the candidates during the
speeches, but not once was the
question put to any candidate as to
how he stood on Jones or Blease,
The speeches made by the candidates
for the different offices were
much the same as those delivered
at other meetings during the campaign,
The main interest was man-1
festtd in the speeches of L B Singleton
and Hal L Buck, the ri^al can didates
for the office of State Senate
L. B Singleton spoke (irst, and gave
an account of his record in the
House. In the course of his speech
he read affidavits from several to
show that at a meeting last Spring
in the court house, lie did not vote
for a resolution favoring the construction
of a new road from Conway
to Myrtle Baaeh. One of these
affidavits had been made by George
t tlio ffnnntv Clork who was
J J l"?l Dll, vi?v v, v, ^
present at the meeting in question
when the above mentioned resolu
tion had been voted upon. Mr Singleton
charged that his opponent
on the other hand had voted for the
the resolution. The affidavit of Mr
Marsh was so worded that it appear
Co that Mr Singleton not only did
not vote for the resolution, but that
he had voted against it. Mr Marsh
was in the crowd and listened at
both speeches Mr Buck had statement
signed by several prominent
citizens statbig that they had been
present at the court hou^e when
the resolution had been voted ou
and that Mr Singleton did not vote
against the resolution for the new
road, Mr Buck attacked Mr Marsh
in his speech, not in an offensive
way, but in a way that was effective
and telling. At the end of Mr
Buck's Speech, Mr Marsh went up
on the platform, and stated that he
thought he was due an opology
f"orn Mr Buck. This Mr I3uck refused
to do, stating tbat he would
make no further opology than he
had already made. In the course of
801110 remarks made by Mr Marsh to
the crowd, he stated that the language
of the affidavit bad been a
little broad, and that he would not
have signed it in exactly that language,
if he had read it first. That
he intended to say in the affidavit
tbat Mr Singleton did not vote for
the resolution, but that he also did

not vote for it. This was perhaps
'.he most interesting incident of the
Saturday meeting.
While the candidates for the
Senate were sneaking. the dailv
papers came in on the train showing
in large headlines that Senator B R
Tillman had come out in plain language
against Blease and in fovor
of Judge Jones. This article by
request, was read to the people by
the chairman of the meeting, Mr L
H Burroughs, and this closed the
Conway meeting.
The large crowd was orderly and
well behaved through out. Many j
questions were asked the candidates
and they were frequently interupted
bv remarks of partisans in the
jrowd. Every thing was taken in
good nature, and the sp3aking lasted
nearly all day.
At the close of the speech of Mr
Singleton for the Senate, a crowd
niti supporters left the meeting,
and carried some of the others with
them. Later it seemed that all
hands had gathered back at the
grounds, and the crowd seemed to
be larger than at first.
After the meeting was over many
people remained on ttie streets until
a late hour, standing in groups and
talking over the situation. Not
least ainon^ the subjects discussed,
was the effect of the letter of Senator
Tillman.

It may bo of interest to your read-!

It is proposed to have a compotent

l it is recognized that while there is
a groat need for such an institution
here, the undertaking is an experiment
I havefuo doubt that it will

The Count y Election.
We give above in tabulated form,
the unofficial returns from all of the
precints in Horry County, showing
the vote cast for county offices. \Te
cannot guarantee that the table is
correct. Figures taken in over the
U lephone, and brought in by hand
a^ these were, ruh a serious risk of
getting tangled. We have be?n as
careful a9 possible to get them in
correctly, and we believe they 9how
the results, which will not likely be
cnanged by the official count, that
will be made iu a few days. The
results as to county officers, as
to county officers, as ihown oy the
above table, areas follows:
Ellerbe perhaps lead Ragsdale by
a little in the county, but it is stated
that Ragsdale has very probably
defeated him iu the race by a
count of the votes in the entire district.
Wells has defeated Gasque for Solicitor
Buck beats Singleton for the Senate
by forty votes.
