referred to measures but to
men, and he was in part correct.
The ambition of our politicians
caused much dlicensions and bickerings
in our party and gave to the
opposition ammunition to light us
with. With the exception of Washington,
the two Adamses, Harrison
and 7'aylor, the Democrats elected
all of their Presidents to the lima
of Lincoln, and could havo remained
in power but for the ambition or
Stephen A Douglas* who endeavored
to foist upon the party a platform
antagonistic to Democratic faith.
The consequence was that when the
Democratic party met in Iialtimorc,
after having failed to nominate at
Charleston, S C , a split took place
and two Democratic candidates entered
the field. Th* consequence
was that Lincoln was elected. That
brought on war, nnd upon its war
record, the Republican party has
kept in power, not altogether that.
This party allied itself with the
trusts and corporations, and we
havo as a result of their dominion,
the unrest of the country and the
high price of living. The result of
iho war left the South prostrate and
in poverty, while to the North all
v/iiu roseate. Money obtained from
(i ivernment contractu was plenty,
and from that aroce the corporate
and trust ii fiucnce which has kept
the Republican party in power. A

a night of despair to the people of
the South gives promise of a brighter

from the Sixth Congressional
District. He has held that
position for several terms, and has
been advanced as only a member of

Representative from the Sixth Congressional
Distriot, but from the 1
whole State. A new man going is
could not expect to get on that im- ,
portant committee. Outside of Mr
Ellerbe'a duties, well performed, as 1
