TIIL'RSDAY. ;JIJLY I A, 1912
The now-pipop reports of the
campaign meetings held so far indicate
that Jones leads Blesse for
Governor in nearly every county
The Horry Tobacco Warehouse
received two large loads of this season's
lobacco one day the latter
narfc of la9t week, the first that we
have heard of.
It appears that "Teddy, the Terrible,"
is set in his purpose to rule
or ruin the Republican party. Well,
.ts the disruption of that party
means the success of the Democratic
party, we say sic him Tigo.
Xho head linos in a recent issue
of the News and Courier informs us
'hnt each American oitiren is six
cents richer by reason of the increase
in the per capita. We have
not yet received our six cents, but
are waiting patiently for it.
The State Board of Pardons has
recommended clemency on eighty
seven petitions in behalf of persons
convicted of crime. The petition!
from Horry r.ro as follows:
Benjamin F Chestnut, manslaughter,
sentenced two years, Sopteru
ber, 1011, pardon recommended.
Gary McQueen, assault and battery
with intent to kill sentenced
February, 1911, sentenced to pay a
fine of $-300 or serve a year. Petition
refused.
J C Lewis convicted of larceny of
live stock and sentenced to three
years and $100 fine. Commutation to
inu _) eai6 i txuiuuivuueu.
Ifc may be of interest to the readers
of the Herald to learn in the matter
Robert Chestnut, petition for pardon,
who was convicted in Orangeburg
September, 1911,of manslaughter
and given 15 years in the penitentary,
the testimony in the case
and the endorsement from Judge
and Solicitor requested.
Some one has said that "the time
is nearly at hand when the Republican
and Democratic party shv.ll
cease to exist as such." The reason
given is that the line of olearagf
is already obliterated in many places
and not even on the matter of thf
tariff is the difference so widea part
"Hundreds of thousands of Republicans
are clamoring for tariff
reduction; a leaser number are
questioning the benefits of the protective
policy to the working ma?,
so long as immigration is unresrioted
One of the most tffeotive charges
against the party by its own rnem
bers p.t the present time is that it
failed to live up to its promise of
four years ago to revise the ta:iff
downward. Rightly or wrongl>
two things servo powerfully to u. dermine
iho loyalty of a great m<*^
uf Republicans to the high protec
tive tar.tf? the unprecedented high
cost of living and the constantly
growing fortunes of those already
inordinantly rich.
,4On the other hand not all Demr crats
are advocates of free trade or
even of tariff for revenue only.
Many loading Democrats are believers
in a protective tariff and thousands
of voters in the South would
be Republicans b cause of the policy
of protection, were it nob for the
race problem."
What Makes X Woman?
One hundred and twenty pounds,
more or less, of bone and muscle
don't make a woman. Its a good
foundation. Put into it health and
strength and she may rule a king
dom. But that's jus* what klectric
Bitters give her. Thousands bless
