The State Candidates Hold i
Forth in Conway j
\
THE GANOIDATES ADDRESS
A Large Gathering of Peopls Heard
the Candidates, Jones and Blease,
Lyon and Evans Held Center of the '
Stage. i
Last Friday was State Campaign *
day at Conway, and there was pres- 1
cut the usual largo crowd of people 1
from all sections of the county.
Arrangements were made for the '
candidates tot-peak in the open air *
under the large oaks on the back <
end of the old N )rinan lot on K?ags- 1
ton Lake. A plat-form was erected
under one of the largest oaks. A 1
large crowd was present by the
hour of 10 o'clock when the speaking
began.
The candidates for State Treasurer
spoke lirst in the following order:
Sara'l T. Carter, D. W. McLauriu.
They were followed by candidates
for Railroad Commissioner: J. H.
Wharton, Jas. Cansler, and John G.
Richards
The next in the list were the candidates
for Attorney General. They
spoke in the order following: J R
Kirle, BB Evans, J Frazier Lyon,
T R Pee pies.
The candidates for Railroad Commissioner
and Attorney, all made
their usual speeches, published in
those colums from time to time
since the State campaign bepan.
None of thorn had anything new.
Cansler for R R Commissioner
made revival hits with good jokes.
(Jol. Wharton made a good speech, (
as did J G Richards. 5
13 13. Evans as usual assailed Lyon 1
on his record in the prosecution of
dispensary grafters. He stated that 1
thai his ancestors settled as pio- 1
neers in this section of the State ,
his grandfather living where Marion j
court h ?use.now stands. '
x During the argument of General
/ Lyon, he was interrupted by J A
bou/verin wnoi.is hero temporarily 1
from Sumter to put up an ice plant
who asked Mr. Lyon why he did not
prosecute Eeldar on the evidence
against him. General Lyon replif d 1
that if anyone had any evidence
against Eelder they had kept it
away from him. Soma more very
hard words passed amid lond cheers
for Lyou, and Schwerin was finally
told by Lyon that he must be one of '
grafters aod interested with them,
Then fciohwerin told Lyon he was a
liar. In cool tones, Gen. Lyon replied
that he Schweriu was a liar
himself, and if he were not satisfied
with ii ho could be funnd nrter the
meeting. There was frequeal loud
cueers lor Lyon, jbchwerin kept interrupting
and many people shouted:
"Lock him up! lock him up."
This put an end 10 trouble. His
hearers assured the Attorney General
that his assailant did not belong
to Horry. Lyon's speech was ended
amid cheers.
The candidates for Governor|hen
spoke, Judge Ira B Jones being
lirst. He made a good speech. He
took up 'the various charges made
against his record by Gov. Hlease.
Ho stated that he had advocated
divorce on the Jground of adultery
alone. That he voted for Col. Irby
because he was true to hi9 faction.
* He voted against the separate coach
law because at that time the law
was not needed. Ho showed that
his reeord had been for white supremacy
in this State and led the
"red shirt" brigade in his county
in '76.
Cole L. Blease came next and
took the stand amid cheers from
his portion of the crowd, He defended
his appointmont of special
j idges, and mentioued the incident
as to the Horry County court, when
he refused to appoint (J. P, (^uattlebaum
t) hold court, Ho stated he
had nothing against C. P, Quattlebauin
but he.understood the law to
be that ho could uot appoint a special
judge as long as there were aoy
regular circuit judges diseugagcd.
Ho stated that two judges were diseugaged
at that time, and for that
reason he could not appoint Col.
Q lattlebaum. He was frequently
I cueered during his speech and the
Blease supporters in the crowd were
very demonstrative.
Governor Blease in the early part
of his speech bad a dispute witQ a
man named Hunt, representing the
Columbia State. He asked if Hunt
wore in the crowd, and Hunt announced
that he was in the outer
edge of the erowd. Blease theu
said that he was told that Hunt
was telling the people that morning
that he (Blease) had been paid
115,000 00 to pardon Stobo Young,
and that Hunt was a miserable and
lying coward, He said tLis as he
pointed directly at Hunt, who tried
to say in the uproar of the crowd,
that what he did say was that there
was a letter io the hands of a young
Wit

.ady in this State from another i
young lady in Chicago, stating that I
3ov. Blease had been paid that j
men for pardoning Young. ^
The Governor repeatedly told
Hunt that he was a liar and that he
aad proved him to be such. Many r
,n the crowd a&ked that Hunt be
permitted toexplain it, but Biease
went on with his speech.
John T. Duncan was the last to j
tddress the crowd,
To the Corn and Cotton Club Boys. c
Perhaps your corn and cotton has
seen damaged some by either the
wet or dry weather. Whatever
nay be the condition in your section,
may be true with the other
joys in this and other counties, so
you should not become discouraged.
In every county more attention is '
?eing given to the corn club work (
ihan the cotton, Horry is the only \
;ounty in the State that has a cot- t
ion club and the prospects are that <
tome of the cotton club bovs will get >
t good yield and win some splendid '
irizes. The prizes will be good this 1
.'ear and J think will justify you in \
jsing ao application of soda. r
I have more than $300 worth of
jrizes to divide among the boys r
icxt Fall?more than we have ever <
lad any year before, yet there is i
nore to come: <
I am anxious for you br ys to do
-veil and make a good yieiu to report
to the National Corn Show to
)6 held in ColumbiaDuring
the National Corn Shovz
,here will be a ten days school for
ihe boys. The department is preparing
a school and accomodation
or a thousand boys from the corn
pelt of the United States. ^
.Experts from different sections
pf the United States will be there to |
nstruct the boys along all linos oi \
'arm work. >
Horry has a large active corn j
plub and I think that T can get twu
icholarships for the county to iho t
ben days school. The Scholarship 1J
will be offered to the boys- making
the greatest yield and covers all ex- j
penses except board while there. i
This I think is worth working for
ind will be appreciated and enjoyed
b>f the boys who succeed in gulling
the greatest yield. t
You boys work hard to raise a good
acre of corn, and I will ao all 1 can I'

A Correction
Owing to a misunderstanding on
the part of the printer last week, an
item appeared concerning Messrs J
K Bowles and W P Lawrence, and
the item read in such a way that it
would appear that they were working
for the same tobacco warehouse
Tne fact is that Mr J H Bowleg is at
the head of the Ilorry Tobacco Ware
house, and Mr Lawrence will be
manager of the Farmers Warehouse,
aud the item should have so stated.
The tvnes irot pied as they are in
'?/ J '.
tho habit of doing, and when two or
more items got mixed together,
there is no telling just what they
will say when they are finally printed
and read.
