THURSDAY, MAY 23, 1912If
a man wishes to know the
mean things he did and did not do
along the journey from the cradle to
the grave, let him go into politics
v and he will soon hear enough to astonishhim.
On account of the low price for
^ the berries on the Northern market
the shipment of them practically
ceased a week or ten days ago. The
crop is unusully large, the berries
fine in size and flavor, yet the prices
obtained did not pay the cost of
production, so we are informed.
The psoposed sale of the Conway,
Coast and Western Railroad to the
. Atlantic Coast Line Railroad Company
means nothing except that
both roads will be operated under
one and the same management,
which is practically being done today
and has been ever since Burroughs
& Collins Co., sold the road
to* Mr James Chadbourn for the
Atlanta Coast Line. We can see
no additional benefit to Conway,
/he Magic City of the Eastern Carolinas,
by the mythical sale,
The railroads coming from all
points of the compass to Conway
which have from time to time been
built upon paper and in the imagination
of over enthusiastic writers,
whose wish was fa. her to the thought
have all petered out and wo bear no
more of them in these days of grace.
All that is left now for us to do is
to pronounce the sad requiem over
the graves of our departed hopes,
R. quiesoat in pace.

So far appeararc?s indicate that
Mr Ellerbe will be returned to Congress
'without opposition. But,
thee, it is rather early in the campaign
to forecast coming events;
and, besides, all the precincts in
the district have not yet been heard
from and just at this time there
is no way of telling how they will
go. It maybe that the aspirants
for his job in Congress at $5,000
per annum, including perquisites
and special privileges, are Micawber
like, "waiting for something to turn
up," and before the door of oppor
tunity is closed they ma* "come out
of the woods" and their name wil
be legion.
