APRIL 4, 1912, In the management of the recently defuofc Lexington Savings Bank it. appears that W P Roof, the President and Cashier and only original manager, is a post graduate in the art offrenzied finance "and with the assistance of "his sisters, his cousins and his aunts," to quote from Pinafore, used his knowledge for his own aggrandizement to the undoing of many poor people of Lexington count}', who having the utmost confidence in his honesty and intcrily, trusted their savings in his keeping onl} to find that in the hour of their need that confidence was found wanting. The outcome of the Girls' Tomato club, now being orgauized by Miss Ida Moore, of the Faculty of the Burroughs Graded school, wili inevitably lead to the establishment of one or more up-to-date canning plants in Horry county. This is our opinion, anyhow, and we thinkthat the trend of events justify us * in giving expression to it. Miss Moore, in the organization of the girls of Horry into tomato clubs, has undertaken a work filled to overflowing with great possibilities in the development of a very important branch of industry, and at the sametimo opens a practical way by which the girls can oy their own endeavor earn money to board and m clothe themselves and have a little over to make home comfortable, hriudifc nnd r.hfmrful. " p The Ladies Aid Society of Kingston Presbyterian church has at last succeeded in lifting the motrgage on the manse. This debt was made to aid in building the manse seve. ral }ears ago ana it has since been hanging over the ladies of the church, who felt somehow responsible for it, like an incubus greatly hampering them in prosecuting other work of benevolence in the fields of Christian endeavor. It was, therefore, decided to remove this debt by liquidating it and getting it out of the way. With the assistance of friends this has been accomplished and this society is now free to undertake greater things looking toward the uplifting of the moral and spiritual condition of the people and the advancement of the Kingdom of Christ. THE COURT HOUSE GROUNDS. A beautiful park can be made on the court bouse grounds and this place is the logical one for the Conway Civic League to make its first ? .1 .1 i_; , demonsiranon luwaru maKiiig ul-uutiful Conway more beautiful. The i improvement of the court house grounds comes as much within the } jurisdicton, or rather under the supervision, of the civic league as does the improvementjof any other part jj of the city. True this is county property and it was the imperative duty of the county and the legislature to provide ways and means . to protect the court house and jail, and their grounds, from tho deplorable condition they are now in; yet it is equally true that the failure of the Act, the Building Commission and the County olUcials to do what i. they ought and sbouldj have, [done, 1 does not relieve Conway and Conway public spiritedness Conway peo i pie from doing their duty. While we are in no position to bind any v one, but we have reasons to believe < that if the Conway civic league will take hold of this matter and show an earnest of their purpose to imi' prove and beautify these grounds they will receive substantia! en Ij couragement7 from the county or Horry, tbe city of Conway ami J. their people will give them substani tial encouragement. Mrs Ellen Tj Stanley, of near Lo^ ris, departed this life on February 6, ltH2, of heart failure. Her remains were laid to rest in the Princeville cemetery. She was confined to her room for some months. All that loving hands and skillful physicians could do was done to relieve her sufferings, but to no avail. She was the daughter of Mr and Mrs J W Thompson and was married to Rev J II Stanley. To this happy union was born seven ehlidren?one daughter, Mrs G M Fowler. She joined the Baptist chucrb at Springfield in the year '76 She afterward moved her membership with her husband to Loris where she assisted in organizing the Baptist church there. Here she remained a faithful member and a most devoted Christian until her death. She was ever ready and willing to contribute to the support of the gospel. Her life was worthy of emulation by all She leaves one brother (Mr J G Thompson) and one sister (Mrs G L Stanley), five children, a loving husband besides a host of friends to mcurii lilJCU IUSO She bore her sufferings, without a murmer, ever putting her trust in God. To know her was to love her. It is hard to give up our loved ones, still wc bow in humble submission to Him who doeth all things well. (1) B? it Resolved, that in her death Pleasant Home Church has lost one of her pillows and charter members. (2) That a copy of these resolutions be sent to the papers for pub lication.
