the petition, on the ground |
that 22 of the original signers of the ]
petition had withdrawn from the j
same, and had filed a counter peti- (
tion to that efieot through their at- (
tornoy, Mr J O Norton. >
Tho friends of drainage in that j
section of the county hid fully expacted
to put the new drainage law |
into operation by means of the peti- {
tion which they had filed for that j
purpose, and they were disappointed i
by the action taken by those who
withdrew^ their names from the \
petition, after first signing it, and (
tho matter cannot be renewed until j
after the expiration of six months \
as provided by a section of the law, f.
In the clerk's office at the time the t
the petition was dismissed, were c
several prominent people from that s
section of the county, interested in ^
this enterprise which would redeem
from the overflows,, many hundreds j
of acres of their lands, t
Those who took their names from ,

* in substance that they had not under r
stood the nature of the petition at j
the 11 mo, and knew nothing of. the [
workings of the law under which ,
the petition had been framed. C F [

cannot now carry out the plan, ,
neither can those who became inter- i
^ ested with him, and helped him in j
pushing the matter along. Petitions
lor drainage districts in other sec- ,
lions of the county are now being ,
circulated, and they will bo filed
and action taken no doubt in the
near future.

A New Ice Plant.
O ir readers have no doubt seen in \
the State papers an item to the effect (
that a commission had been granted j
to Quattlebaum Ice Company, of <
Couway, the corporators consisting ,
of Messrs C P Quattlebaum, Paul ,
Quattlebaum and McQueen Quattle- |
bauin. Tnis is aw enterprise which j
will have ten thousand dollars ca .
pital, and will be able no doubt to
iurnish-ull the ice that will be need- |
ed at Conway and throughout the ]
county and adjoining territory .
Such a plaut is very much needed in <
this section of the State, and the ]
Herald wishes success to those who |
have launched the en'erprise. Toe i

The imperative necessity of further
work in beautifying the public j

by many, and often commented up
on. Judges in their charges to the
juries have dwelled at leugtb on the |
subject, and we have some recollection
of a recent grand jury that recommended
that provision be made 1
by the Legislature and other authorities,

had no effect, and so far
as we can learn nothiug, of a - public
nature, has been done or attempted

while talking over the matter

progress which Horry is making
along ail lines will be glad to know
that Miss Marie E. Cromer is coming
to our county in the nea" future.
She will be here Feb. 14-19 Miss
Cromer is the originator of the Giris
Tomato Clubs which have b c nue so
fimous in this and other States.
She is coming to Horry in the interest
of this great movement
We are indeed fortunate to have
Miss Cromer visit our county and
atart Tomato Clubs here. However,
she can give us only a few days
of her time, and we wish to make
the most possible out of those few
lays. In order that no time may be
lost, Supt. S. H. Brown has arranged
to meet Miss Cromer at Loris on
the mid-day train Wednesday, beginning
at Loris, they will visit as
many Schools as possible on Wednesday,

in this county.
This case was to have been triod
anuary 13th, but on accouut of the
nclemenoy of the weather was con
inued until January 27th, wmn the
