defences for prisoners, or
who procures their acquittal by the
practice of any manner of deceit, ,
cajolery, willful distortion, or mis- j

as the letter of the law, is to be
reckoned a^ an en* ray to society more
dangerous thau the criminal himself,
while success at the bar, won
by such methods, can never bo the
basis of desirable professional reputation,
but on the contrary are

We are inclined to the opinion
that many of the opponents to the
re-election of Governor Blease to
that high and exhalied office, are
committing a grave, and perhapN
fatal political blunder in opp sing
any and all measures .and suggestions
coming from the Executive
department.
In doing so they are but furnish2

them in the August primary election,
and that it can very effectively
be used in confounding and putting
his political enemies to route has
been demonstrated on more than
one crucial moment wben the balances
were wavering and an antom
of public sympathy would turn them

Whatever might be said against
the social attributes of Governor
Blease and his ability as a statesman,
it cannot but be admitted that he is
a sharp, shrewd aud designing
politician of unscrupulous principals
in that he has stolen the tactics of
Ben Tillman to serve his own selfish
personal ends while wanting in the
ennobling characters' ics which has
enaoled the Senator to lay aside his
prejudices and the meaner elements
of his character and use his talents
for the uplifting of his people and
for the honor aud gl rv of Us State
It is also equally apparent that -he
has, and will continue to to do so.
turn oyery mistake of his adversaries
to his own advantage and to the
promotion of his own selfish interefts.
It is a well recognized and a generally!
deplorable fact that the unnecessary
and childish attacks upon
him by Mr Felder, "the man from
Georgia", and Lyon, the South Carolna
political monstrosity who promised
upon the hustings of the State
that if he were elected Attorney
General he would have the alleged
dispensary grafters behind the bars
and adorn their persons with the
stripped garments of shame and
disgrace, have fallen flat. They demand
solid facts not idle and meaningless
to convince them of Blease's
uufifcness for the office to which ho
seeks. We repeat with added emphasis
that such unsurported chanr*
us and unredeemed pledges can pos
sibly do Blease no harm and conse^ently
opens the way for him to
appeal effectively to the sympathies
ef the people and establish himself
more firmly in their confidence.
The proper and only tangle way
bo defeat the Governor in his candidacy
for re-election is to let him
alone. He can possibty do no more
barm to the good name of the Slate
bban his enemies claim he has already
done. Give him credit for
the little good which he might by accident
be able to do and let the
people condemn him for the many
?rave and unpardonable mistakes
which will naturally mark his un
3avory administration to his politi
jal undoing and his political dishonor
