Notwithstanding that the Weather Had
Been Bad for Some Days and Mud
and Slush Were Everywhere, Fun
und Frolic Were Enjoyed by Both
Old and Young.
Christmas Day passed off at Conway
in much the usual way, and
aside from a few minor disturoances
caused by tne too-free use of intoxicants
there was nothing to mar tne
peace and quietude of Christinas
and Christmas Eve. Oa Saturday
one or two meu, uuder tbe influence
of wniskey, got to talking too loudv-jP
ly and making some other manifestations
of disorderly conduct, and
they were locked up by the officers
and placed where they would not
longer disturo the peace of th *>
streets Oa tne hill some of the
negroes got too much liquor and in
a cutting affray waich took place in
couscquence, one or two of them
was oadiy used up with a sharp
knife. One of them was carved up
to such an exieut that it was found j
necessary to bring him down town
to a doctor where his wounds were
dressed. Most of the stores were
closed. Some of them were opeu
for very brief intervals through the
day.
The amount oi ure wuina udoviujed
reached larger proportions perhaps
than for several Christmas days
past. The cement sidewalks in the
maiuj business section of the town
were literally strewn with the remaius
of lire crackers, skyrockets
Hainan candles. In the residence
section of the town, the small boys
kept up the fusilade throughout the
day. and until long into the hight.
Alter the supply laid in on last
Saturday had been used up, new
supplies were obtained at the stores
and they returned to the ''Charge
of the Light Bridge." A body of
the larger ^rnaii uoys of the town
banded together witn drums and
tin horns, and other noiiday utensils
ana went .irom place to pmce, ou
{Saturday night aau Monday, enjoying
oiie in selves as only small uo.vs
cm, and serenading their little
fri nds. On Saturday night it is
said that some of the larger people
joined in tnis fun.
Tne weather which had been bad
for some lime, remained so throughout
the yule-tide. There were
showers of ra\n on Saturday, and on
Monday the sity remained dark and
it was rather cold and raw. The
streets of the town were just in
the process of rebuilding with clay
and sand, and the frequent travel
over tliem during the week of bad
weather, resulted in making them
worse than the country roads, Owners
of automobiles were slow to
bring out machines, and those who
travelled about the streets, complained
of the mud and other annoyances
due to the rains.
. O 1 the whole ih6dny was enjoyed
ft much in Conway, there were many
visitors to the town during Monday
and Saturday.
