I I I*', jfc Ifte gtag Jgw/UL Entered at the Poet Ofllco at Conway, 8. C as Second Class Mall Mutter. P JUL18HED EVERY THURSDAY MORNING BY CONWAY PUBLISHING CO. lUBiORIPTJON ONE DOLLAR PER YEAR H. H? WOODWARD; Editor THURSDAY. DECEMBER 21, 1911 Congressman Ellerbe has endor sed the candidacy of Senator Tili man for re-election. This endorsement ensures the return of the Senator beyond peradventure Chiof Justice Jone-5, occupying thr exhalted position be does, cannot disgrace and bring disrepute upor. the sacred ermine, by making a personal canvas of the State at this time in the interest of his candidacy for Governor, yet his friends all over tho State, appreciating bis position, are active in his interests and much good has already been accomplished and much more is to follow. Governor Blease has refused to commission Judge Smith of the Uni ted States District Court as Truster of the High School of Charleston, on the ground that he already holds one office. The position of Gover nor Blease is warranted by the State Constitution which provide.4 one person from holding two offices. * If we have a constitution which if the mudsill of liberty, let us obey it in all of its requirements, The State and Federal Grand Juries in several sections of the country are diligently inquiring into the cause of mysterious dynamite explosions which have occurred ir. certain sections of the country for the past several years. Let the probe ?0 deep sure and let no guilty man escape the penalty of his misdeeds whether he be a capitalist, a representative of capital, a labor union man or a scab. ? _ _ Conway has made some progress during the year just drawing to a close. While we are thankful for what has been accomplished in the way of development and building up of many of the waste places about townj yet we must confess that the showing of the year's work is not near what it should have been considering the capital laying idle in the vaults of the banks and in the] coffers of others. We hope to see better results at the end of the incoming year. Let us try and make il so. From what we can gather the farmers of Horry intend to pay more attention the coming season to the production of food stuffs than that of cotton. In other words they seem to be impressed with the importance of raising their own supplies for home consumption and saving the ingredients for making their own fertilizers. They also propose, from what we understand, to lop off all needless expenses in in operating their farm works, and practice, wherever practicable, rigid economy and place their business upon a paying basis. When this is 1 # ? !I1 1 done, men larming win pay ana Horry the "garden spot" of the world will bear abundantly of the rich fruits of progress. LET NO GUILTY MAN ESCAPE. Just now organized labor is up to a toughiproposition, but bye and bye the clouds will roll by and into the purified atmosphere there will come 'a better understanding between capital and labor and both will work together harmoniously in the interest of the other. We do not, now nor never have, believed that labor should be in a position to control capital for the moment that is done that moment labor becomes unreliable. worthless and not to be depended upon. Such a condition tends to debase and degrade laboi rather than elevate and ennoble the God blessed calling. It breeds dis content and indolence aud the fruiti of these are riot, anarchaism acdal the rest of the evil isms. This prop ositlon is so apparent that it is uni vcrsally accepted as a fact amonj, all classes of people everywhere On the other hand ynrestrainedcap I % and unfair. In the name and under the protection of law it has shot down with the flimsiest pretext and the slightest provocation men, womeu and children, whose only misfortune it seems that they were merely onlookers upon some real or imaginary riot and who had the courage of their conviction and had the temerty, if you please, to give expression to them which they had a right to do under the Constitution of both their State and country. We oave had bitter experiences in the past, enough at least to make this this statement an absolutely uncontrovertable fact Rapine on the one side and the sheddiugof blood on the olood generally mark the passing of i clash between labor and capital. It is not reasonable to say that in -jvery struggle between the warring elements that labor is in the wrong, nor is it fair nor just to presume sbat capital is entirely blameless [n ninety-nine cases out of hundred both are to blame and both are more jr less responsible for the deplorable and awful climax.. Unless there is a radical change in public opinion, and unless there is a different system in the settlement of the differances arising between employers employees these unreasonable clashes will continue to be marked by unlawful acts bv the representives >f the one and the sympathizers of ihe other. This is a foregone conelusion. In the absence of a better suggestion, in our humble judgnent, there should be a National Board of Arbitration, free from the allurements of the one and the entanglements of the other to whom all questions of differences shall be referred and whose findings shall be final and and unalterable as the laws the of Meades and Persians. This we think will be a peaceful solu'. ion of the problem. Catarrh Cannot be Cured. with local applications, as they cannot reach the seat of the disease.
