The Atlantic Coa9t Line Good Roads Train, consisting of several cars, was in Conway from Sunday f n gat to 12 o'clock on Monday, according to its advertised schedule published some few weeks ago in the columns of the Herald. One of the cars was devoted to demonstraf tion work, and modern methods of road building were demonstrated with working models of all the leadi?i' invpnt.innH n-lon*/ this line. An ofcber car was the lecture car. Many of our leading citizens visited the cars during their stay in town, and the demonstrations and lectures were entertaining as well as instructive. The train remained at the depot until about 9 o'clock on Monday morning when it was stationed on the track on Main Street, in front of the Herald oilice where the cars were handy to all who wished to go through them. The electric lighting system run by a 3 borse power gasoline engine, was among the interesting things inspected by the farmors visiting the train, The Atlantic Coast Line is doing all in its ^ power to build up the sections " through which it passes, and the , question of good roads is not the only enterprise that it has been fosteriD?. Farmers are about through pick in# cotton m mis section, sumc v hem are holding their cotton for better prices. Miss Blanche Norton, of Mullins, S. C , has been teaching our school at this place. She is a very good teacher and gave entire satisfaction This place was saddened very much when she returned home. Miss Norton has a warm welcome in our midst at any time. There was a very nice fruit supper given at the home of Mr and Mrs A. W Hacks on last Saturday night. Every one present seemed to enjoy tue occasion very much. Who will give the next fruit supper? He stayed only a short while; but, as is always the case, it was a very pleasant stay to the children. Time alone wiil reveal the fruitage that is to result from his heart to heart talks with the people as he visits the school of the county. He complimented our school on its very full attendance, excellent order, and Interest in the games. We regret very much to learn that the illness of Mr. C. C? Bland, of Scballotte, will prevent his son Carson from returning to school before Christmas. The young man is a fine debater, and is badly needed to appear in defense of a fellow student at the moot county court next week Mr. W. Kenneth Suggs our brilliant voung speaker from Horry, has been engaged for the prosecution. A Pound Party. I Old Uncie B.ll is getting old and hardly able to do any thing, but will do when he is called on as long as he liV68. He has never failed to do when he was called on when he was able. Now friends, we do not know who will make our coffins, it may be Uncle Bill Carter for all we know, but lets give him a good pounding on I that night. The proceeds are to be used f >r the improvement of the Sundaj School rooms. Judge Chestnut's Court. The Magistrate court at Conwa3\ W. H. Chestnut, presiding, was occupied one day last week with the trial of the case of J. H. Lee, plaintiff vs. J. W. Lewis, defendant, the suit growing out of a dispute as to the ownership of a wagon in the position of the defendant. The plaintff claimed that he had purchased 1 hn i xt f\ f ** r\ m o n t f v* tuu >VIA^UU ILl'LJU tuc uuiriiuau U ll/l the sum of ten dollars, and the defendant contended that the ten dollars was a loan and p\id in consideration of the purchase price of the vehicle. Neither side had lawyers. A inry of business men about town was empanelled to try the case, and the trial resuked in a verdict for the plaintiif. Sudden Death. Solomon James, a farmer living m the Pee Dee section, near Pauley Swamp, church, died very suddenlv on last Thursday, and the interment took place on the following day. Taken very ill all at once on a day or two before a doctor was sent for, and in the mean time some member of the family made some strong poppy tea and administered it in the hope of allaying the pain. He died on the day following and it is said that there .were indications that he died from an overdose of the tea, or opium poisoning. Pie was the efficient carrier of the mail from Con way to Dongola, and up to the time of his death made several trips every week to the county seat, lie was twice married, and he is survived by his second wife and many children by his first marriage. . ?? i > i i Magistrate Court at Loris. Magistrate J. E, Prince at Loris, was engaged last Saturday in the trial of a case brought by Ed Fowler against Stephen Bucks, the charge being thit the defendant, as teacher of the Harrelson school, between Green Sea and Tabor, N. C,, had unmercifully whipped ooe of Fowler's children, and thereby committed an assault and battery. A jury was empanelled to try the case, and many witnesses were sworn tD try to show that the whipping exceeded the bounds of reason. For the de foncn 51". wvlq ..linajn hu tlic rlaf/inll ? n 1-. himself, and several witnesses, mat the boy Monroe Fowler had been giving trouble in the school before, and ihat his father had frequently objected to his punishment, also thai Ed Fowler had written a note to the teacher telling hint that a certain rule which the teacher made must be changed etc. The defendant tesiiliad that Lu only gave the boy such punishment as in his judgment was netded for the child's correction, and that it was in moderation, and not excessive. Tne defense was represented by U H. Woodward ot the Conway bar. The prosecution had not employed a lawyer but its interests were looked after bv P. C. Prince, who as a layman handled the case well. The jury lied up on the question, and the magistrate declared a mistrial. No time was lixed for the now trial of the case, but it will not come oil until home time in January alter ibo Holidays Florida Notes. Much of the cotton crop of 1911 is still in the fields and the farmers cannot get the labor for picking it out. T. F. R D Cox, formerly of this county, nut now with the Hebard Cypress Company, of Tbomasviile, Ga., arrived in Conway one day the first >f this week to sp^nd the holidays ^ his old home. An agreement was reached last veek between the attorneys representing the different claims against ihe New York Racket Store Company, so that the store would be opened, the goods sold out out by the sheriff of the county and the proceeds of the sales held by him until oaid out by tbe order or court, or further agreement of all concerned. MT9. Robert Chestnut, of Orangeburg has been in the county securing uames to a pet ition for the pardon of tier husband U. B. Oiiestuut, who is in the penitentiary serving a lifteen year's sentence for the murder of a Mr. Sabin in that city about a year ago. .Mr. Chestnut is a native of Horry. Sale for Foreclosure.
