THURSDAY. NOVEMBER 23, 1911
All of the three announced candidates
for Governor?Blease, Jones
and Duncan?are originally from
Newberry county. /
It will doubtless be news to many
of the friends of Mr James Henry
Rice in this part of the State to
learn that he has forsaken the field
of journalism and has taken to the
lecture platform.
A great drawback to sucessful
farming in Horry is the cost of la

up the profits. But ws are glad to
observe and proud to pay that this
drawback is being more and more
remedied each year by the introduction
of an improved system of farm
ing and the use of the latest improved
farming machinery and implements.
Secretary of Agriculture Wilson
is authority to" the statement that
nearly $14,000 000 have been expended
this year in the Southern States
alone in building good roads, of
which am >unt South Carolina contributed.
$1,100,000. It is a sad
commentary upon the patriotism
and public spiritedness of the United
States government, who uses these
roads as post roads and claim and
exercise the ri,rhtof way over them,
J? It ono oanf

toward their construction or maintenance.
Yet it is a disgraceful
fact.
Prof J Frost, the noted Artie explorer,
and the only original discoverer
of the North Pole, arrived in |
Conway last Wednesday night on
his aeroplane, "The North Star,"
direct from his far northern
home, with a view of sojourning
here, but finding climatic condition*
so unfavorablo to his health and well
being he mounted his aeroplane and
flew to a more congenial clime. He
is authority for the statement that
neither Dr Cook or Peary ever
came any way near reaching the
North Pole, but of the two Cook
came nearer than Peary. This
statement should settle the controversy.
TO IMPROVE TAX SYSTEM,
The next General Assembly of
South Carclina should appoint a
committee to revise the tax laws of
the State, so as to make the rule of
assessing taxable values for taxalion
comply with the plain mandates
of the State Constitution
that all property shall be assessed
for taxation at one hundred cents on
the dollar?no more, no less. There
are othe g aring evils of the present
ys tern of assessing property that
needs to be revised and improved
upon.
TIIE NEW DEPOT.
A message vii the Grapevine telephone
comes to us that the railroad
people have abiut decided to grant
the request of the business interests
of Conway in reference to making
the site of the old turntable a pas
sender station and that the arcbi-1
tocts have been instructed lo draw j
plans for tho depot. This is certainly
good news for many of the
people of Conway, and should it
pro/e true, we will all join in ascribing
praise and honor and glory unto
the railroad people for giving us
that which we so greatly need. This
is a plain business proposition, pure
and simple, made from one body of
business men to another in a business
like way, and we are confident
that the railroad people will give the
matter careful consideration and after
an imparlisl investigation will
appreciate the great possibilities of
the improved passenger service and
I the benefits that will follow to both
the road and the town of Conway.

ADVANCE GUARD DRIVERS
ARRIVING IN SAVANNAH
Trying Out for Vanderbllt and Grand
Prize Races.
Savannah, Qa.?The advance guard
of drivers and cars for the Vanderbllt
Cup and International Grand Prize
races and light car races, which will
take place in Savannah on November
27 and 30, have already arrived and
are daily trying out tho famous courso
over the Chatham county roads. With
the large number of entries and tho
world's most famous drivers, thcso
two big blue ribbon events of automobiledom
will unquestionably prove
the greato3t road races over held in
tho world. Never beforo have two
events of such magnitude been held
at one time. Heretofore tho Vauderbilt
Cup race was held at Long Island
In October and the International Grand
PH'/o Rnno at Savannah in November.
Owing to the inability of the promoters
to got the proper protection for
tho course during tho raco and tho
unequalled facilities offered by Savannah,
it was decided this year to
hold the big event at Savannah. It
can hardly bo called a curtain raiser
for the Grand Prize, as it is itself
such a world famous raco, but it will
be run first and two days later the
Grand Prize raco will be run, the two
days being allowed to give competitors
In tho Vanderbilt race ample
time to overhaul and "tune-up" their
big space-killers for the Grand Prize
event. In these races and the light
car events it is probable that over
seventy-five cars will be entered. Tho
course is seventeen miles long, and
with the cars eating up distanco at

cars have been entered, the
most dare-devil drivers in the world
have b?en secured and it is absolutely
certain that the excitement is going
to be intense and the ruces the
grandest sport ever held in the South
and, barring unforeseen accidents,
the greatest the world has ever yet
known.
