A Letter from Florida.
Mr Editor: Will you please allow
me space in your valuable paper for
a few words, as it has been a good
while since I have seen anything
from the Land of Flowers.
First, I will say that the health
of the people through this section is
generally good.

There hasn't been rain enough
tlirough this section sii.ee the hurricane
in 1910 swept the Florida coast
to wet the ground. The stock in the
woods are suffering and dying for
the want of water and the people,
where they haven't flowing wells,
are put to it to get water for drinking
and cooking purposes Also the
weather is extremely hot for this
season of the year?warmer than
any summer was. But there is one
great blessing with us along the
coast, we are getting plenty of fat
mullets. I, with mv two little boys,
caught upward of 900 fine fat mullets
in the surf on last Friday night.
Mr Editor, how is the good roads
system progressing in worry f me
citizens of the county where I am
residing have got a move on themselves
and the hard surface roads are
rapidly moving forward. Along the
coast where oyster shells can be
handily gotten, they use them for
making a hard road bed and they
make an everlasting good road. In
other parts they use rock. I think
that the citizens of Horry could get
this material for road surfacing
along the eastern and south-eastern
parts of the county along the coast,
if tbev talk up for it, and it is the
cheapest, material in the long run
where it is to not be drawn too far,
for cyster shells can be put out on
the banks of the river for 10c. per
bbl, and one horse with a <!>>rnp cart
will draw from eight to t? u barrels
and one barrel will shell the ruts for
a space for five feet. Now. Mr cflic.ials,
figure and see which < omes the
cheapest, the shell or the clay. The
shell is the lightest to draw and
won't wash or bog, but alv avs stay
and be hard with little patching
The clay will stick and mire, 1
haven't anything more to say in regard
to good roads, except to express
the hope that the good roads
movement in Horry and the State at
large will rapidly go forward, for
good roads are the upbuilding of

trained nurse at the Flagler hospital

lleved that banner crouds will attend
the annual event, which will be held
in Columbia October 30 to November
3, next.
The railroads not only have offered
the usual low rates, but have made
arrangements to run special truins
during Fair Week for the accomodation
of the throngs of Soutii Carolinians
expecting to attend.
These special trains are so arranged
'in to offer to people outside tho capital
city a chance to make a one day
trip to the Fair with no Inconvenience
caused by lack of trains. The

Determined Action Against Tobaoco
Trust's Reorganization Plan.
New York, October 19?Sixty
leading officials of practically all independent
tobacco companies in the
country, representing, it was given
out, a total capital of $250,000,000,
employing 100,000 persons and including
80 per cent, of the independent
cigar manufacturers' interests
and 0 ) per cent, of cigar loaf tobacco
dealers and packers in the
country, got together and decided
upon the unanimity of action in opposing
the A merican Tobacco Company's
plan of disintegration. Representatives
of labor in the tobacco
industry were also present.
Resolutions were adopted condemning
the plan as not effective in
bringing about competitive conditions
and it was voted that the organizations
present should each select
one representative to form ail
advisory committee. This committee
will meet soon when a plan of
action will be definitely outlined.
