I i 5 ' f V ...... x Hold Your Cotton. " Dear Mr Editor: Will you please allow mo space la the columns of your paper to give my friends of Horry county a few observations ^ made at. nay present place of ad dress in Tennessee. I regret very much to say I'm not a subscriber to the Horry Herald, but would be if At. wasn't for the present situation of my position. I era making mv headquarters in the "City" of Jackson, but am there only occasionally I am working in the capacity of traveling salesman ?v in the interest of a wholesale houso located in North Carolina. I am today stopping in Hall's Tenn., at. the Shouse Hotel. This seems to be a right prominent little business town. I have traveled in six States, but I shal 1 have to confess that 1 believe m ~ ^" l^not nf nil IPDIlPSSPe tu ue i.urj vv/ow ui u>>. This is certainly a heal thy and lovely State to reside in. and very sublime * for the purpose of making money. It is very gratifying to me to see great progress that farmers of this State seem to be making toward prosperity. Those of the interior of the State seem to be taking the greatest interest in the farming business. They are well equipped with sufficient implements for farming, and also have some af the best farming lands I have ever seen anywhere. The people of Tennessee have been blessed th's year with fairly ^ good seasons, and excellent good crops are the results, especially cotton and corn. - - ? iti. i i 1 believe the farmers 01 r-nis loumitv will be able to gather from one f to two bales of cotton par aoro^this fall if nothing prevents from now. They all seem to be in pretty good spirit any more than the complaining of low prices. I believe the farmers here raise some of most everything that is generally raised in the southern states. Cotton is just beginning to open here, and picking will soon be general in this locality. The staple this year is extra quality, the bolls large and the lint long and fine. All seems to be satisfied with the crop if the price i? right. Now, Mr. Editor I would like to call the attention of the many read ers of this article to the serious condition that confronts us in the outlook for low prices for this year's _ _ crop or cotton, oixt_y uuv? t^u, cofcton sold here at 15c spot, To-day t tho^e who would not sell then ^ would be glad to get 12c. What. ' brought about such a slump in so short a tirm* after cotton had held steadily for ten months atl4c to 15c? It is said because there is a prospect of over fourteen millions bales. Is it not more likely to be because the world judging by t.he past, think it can stampede the farmers and the merchants and buy this crop at eny ^ old price. Wo hea** it said that cotton will sell bdow 10c before Christmas The rr.ei who are predicting such prices ore working with might and aim to bring about 10c cotton by telling their tarmer friends that crop is larger on record. They say you ought to sell us just as tast as you can, for cotton is bound to go lower. 9 Apparently not knowing that this is the very way to bring about a lower level of prices. Now we have no quarrel to make with the spinners who want low price cotton, for it is only apart of his busino-s to get his raw material at the lowest possibe price, and sell his finished product at the highest . possible price. How many southern ^ men can wish to s? e low prices for c.ottou or in any way give aid and encouragsment to the enemy by jjin uing in tho hue and cry that prices are bound to go lower is past roj comprehension, and now we ask cv ^ ery merchant, banker, railroad mar and business man in every calling lo join with the farmers union ii urging every farmer to hold his cot ton until the world is willing to pa^ a living price for it. Such a course can hurt, no one, and it will hel} everybody, the merchants, by giving them cash customers for their goods bankers by (large deposits,Jlhe rail roads by more freight on imp ,rte< goods that our people will have th money to buy; and every profes sion and calling by the increase ii \ the circulating medium brough about by the larger flow of foreigi gold in all Mv? commerce There cm be no qaco?i. 11 out thai this will bo the result of higher price for cotton. If it wtre not trui <4 from whence come* the presen prosperity of the South? Ic wa 15 cents cotton that did it. A surely as the sun rises in the eas and sets in the west just so sure wr hA atfu/nation and want, dte VM\'? v n . tress and bitterness in thousands c homes in the south, and they wi not ail be farmers, homes, if we )c this crop sell for 10c or kss. Wit the woid's stock of cotton alrao.* depleted; with the automobile tir industry alone taking thousands < bales of cotton annually; increase consumption on every side; t his yea crop oau be marketed for 14c or 12 per pound just as easily as las year's crop was* if the farmers wi but. hold out for it. I This is not meiely my opinioi ' but the opinion of as shrewd bui iness men as the ones who predii that cotton will continue to #o loi er. Besides, there s many a si 'twixt the cup and the lip, the bum er crop is not secure yet, aud the Is a larjcre acreage of late cottc which can not possibly make a ft crop under the most favorable co ditioa Worms, boll weevil, ru and storms all may come and d stroy thousands of bales yet. \ urqe the farmers here not to sell snj old price, but to hold their c< I ton until the price reaches the raixlmum, and if you are bound to have help you can go to the merchant or local bank, either of whom I believe is standing in readiness to help the fellow who is trying to help himself. Hold your cotton during the next sixty days, and perhaps the price will go up and the battle will be won, and the south will be made prosperous and happv Best wishes to the Herald and its many readers. ?
