k Popular Young Man Meets
With Bad Accident
INJURIES MAY BE FATAL.
While in the Discharge of His Duties |
> Connected With the Logging Department
of the Conway Lumber Company,
George Cannon is the Victim
of an Accident Which May Terminate
Fatally. Drs Burroughs and
Dusenbury Render All Assistance
Within Their Power to Relieve the
Sufferings of the Young Man.
George Cannon was run over by a
lbggiug engine last Tuesday about
r noc n time in the timber woods of
Conway Lumber Company, near
Gunters Island, resulting in the
mangling of his thigh, to such an
r extent that the limb had to be am
putated, 13e is a son of G Wa9h
Cannon, of the. Pee Dee section, and
quite a young man. He was employed
by the Conway Lumber Co ,
in place of another young man, who
had rotrgned the position, or who
was temporarily away at the time
It is reported that i ha engine had
gone up into the eouutry and on to
a side track or tram road, for ih^
purpose of loading logging cars with
logs, and .young Cannon was riding
on the locomotive toward the frontend,
for the purpose of attending to
various duties connected with the
handling of the engine and ears.
For some reason, which is not stated
the locomotive jumped the track
without warning. Young Cannon
was knocked oil and his leg was
f caught underneath the wheels of
the locomotive or tender, and tor
ribly mangled before engineer Kicks
couid stop the train. As xhe engine
stopped it pinned ihe injured
man down with the limb under the
wheels. The engineer with almost
superhuman strength managed to
raise the machinery up so that Cannon
could be released irom it.
The injured man was hastily
brought down to Conway where he
received medical attention from
Doctors Dusenbury and Burroughs,
the mangled leg beiQg amputated.
The young man stood the operation
remarkably well, and at last accounts
he was expected to recover.
Members of the man's family and
relatives were summoned from their
home in the Pee Doe section, and
> he was taken to the home of his sister,
Mrs Jim Bran ton, in the Gully
neighborhood.
