? gann gcmfdL LUteitul Ml 11- ? 1'rHt Oflloo 11' Coi M'dy, ( hh Second CIhi?h .Mail JH.itler. PUBLISHED KVEKY THURSDAY MORNING ?3Y CONWAY PUBLISHING CO. 8UVVUK1PTJON ONE DOLLAR PKR YEAR II, H. WOODWARD. Keillor THURSDAY. AUGUST 24 1911 SOME REFLECTIONS. As will be seen by reference to an article published elsewhere in this issue in rcferoneo to artesian well.4' that Horry is not given a place in the picture and her absence from it is conspicious for the reason that according to the figures given above there are more artesian wells in Horry than there are in any county in the State, and more in Conway than there are in any other hamlet, village, town or city in the same commonwealth, In Conway alone there are between thirty-five or forty of these wells ranging in depth from 200 to 000 or more feet, and there are equally as many more, if not more, distributed throughout the county. Why Horry, easily the 1 ? a ^ C 4-U r* C f a i n ! 11 n_ oanuer uuuui^y ui iijc uvaic in i gard to artesian wells, was left out of the picture can be explained on the hypothesis, that the writer of ' the article in the Columbia State is ignorant of the facts as they exist aud as it is reasonable to presume that his information must of a necessity come from outside the editorial rooms of that paper in Columbia, and the failure of our people to furnieh him with the necessary data to I enable him to give credit where credit is due, is clear that he is blameless of any intentional misroprensation of facts. Our observa tion has been that the State news per lias been careful to be accurate in its statements regarding the growth and development of the __ _ i ; j _ 1 . econimics, nowever wiueiy n may have deviated on other subjects, and we are confident that had our own people given the writer of the article the information Horry would have been given the credit, if there be credit in having artesian wells, which we submit there is, to which she is justly entitled to aud ought to have. Onr people are enterprising and industrious as a rule but unfortunately for us and our good and the good of Horry we are by far too secrative in many of our undertakings of a public nature and of public interest looking toward the establiahmentof a new enternrise or the improvement of an old one. We try to hide our light under a bushel in reference to these matters and are ashamed or afraid to let our left hand know what onr right hand does. In this respect we are too much like a cooter and then when we are faced with the fact we try to crawl on backwards like a crawfish, whereas we should let our neighbors know what wo are doing in order that they, seeing our good works, will do something even better toward building up our county and towns and our communities, We should realize that every time Horry is called upon she will deliver the goods Dr Twitehell's opinion as regards the purity of artesian water and his reasons for that opinion, aro of inestimable value to our people in reference to health conditions. There is an impression among a few that artesian water is impure and, strange to say, that this impression is given color, by not all, but a ; *ew members of the medical profes- I bion of Horry who declare that this water is injurious to ooth animal and vegetable life. We submit that this is erroneous upon the testimony of not only Dr Twitched but coroborated by other eminent authorites whose, conclusions have been arrived at by years of study and experiments. To illustrate: Right hero in Conway we have sickness, disease and death. Those things follow the curse. Wherever human lite exists these afflictions will be found. It is noticeable that a large per cent of what lil tlo I.a... :~ I - uivn UVOO Hint' IS IJUri*, it is confined almost entirely to that section of the town where the pump or open well water is parly or exclusively used for domestic purposes. The moral of the whole subject is that arosian water is absolutely pure contrary tofthe opiniin of what others may hold. NOTICE.
