'The new folder issued bv the Atlantic
Coast Line Railroad company,
giving information and schedules
with regard to the operation of its
passenger trains and connections,
carries on its back cover an interesting
letter written by Messrs
Ashley <& Eistrcup, two Colorad ;
inen who setthd in Horry county
several years ago for the purpose of ?
growing strawberries. This letter,
which is dated July 20th, 1911, and
whi< h is addressed to Mr E N Clark,
the Agricultural and Immigration
Agent of the Atlantic Coast Line,
is well wo th quoting:
44 'Con p /ing witn your request to

strawberries since we moved
here from Colorado,' writes Messrs
Ashley ?& Eastroup. 'will say that
we grew the li s Klondyke strawberries
th it, were grown in this sec
tion in 1905 and have been growing
them profitably every year since.
'Our first year growing Klondykes
exclusively was in 1907. Our crop
that year averaged between $5 75
and $6 per crate, net.
' 'In 1908 we made 590 crates on
four acres and sold them for $2,880,
net.
4 4 4 In 1909 we made 526 crates on
four and a haif acres and sold them
for $2 150
44'Owing to the dry spring in
1910, we only picked 525 crates. The
berrios showed the effect of the
drought being small and sold for
$1,420.

four acres and sold them for $2,207

health has been good.

and arrived at Liverpool in good
condition.'
"In a letter to the News and Courier,
Mr Clark, who recently spent
several days in Horry county investigating
agricultural conditions
there states that the experience of
Messrs Ashley & Eastroupis not exceptional.
"There are a number of farmers
from the East and West in that
county all growing strawberries and
other crops,' writes Mr Clark, "I
never talked to a more enthusiastic
set of Farmers in my life. However
they have good reason to be as they
are all eujuying good health and
making money. They say all that
is needed is more good farmers to
help settle up the good lands that |
are uow idle. 1 saw fine cotton
growing on lands that had already
produced two crops of vegetables
this spring Tnat county is compcrativel.y
young in agriculture,
yet it is making great strides. The
farmers are stumping their land,
draining and using the up -to-date
methods. I took a trip of a hundred
miles in an automobile and
never saw better crops of corn, cotton,
tobacco, peanuts, sugar cane,
sweet potatoes, etc. growing anywhere
than I saw on the trip. I

or better farming lands anywhere
than some of the lands in Horry
county and there are thousand of
acres of this rich land ready for
setters as the timber has practically
all been cut oil' aid the owners are
offering it at reasonable prices.'
"The rich possibilities of the Independent
R. public of Horry have
long been advertised to the readers
of the News and Courier: and in recent
years Mr James Henry Rico,
Jr., while a resident of Conwav,
made thousands of people acquainted
with them. We are glad to see the
Atlantic Coast Line besirring itself
to the end that their development
may be promoted yet more rapidly,
There is a great field here for railroads
to do work which will repay
them many fold. Horry co mty is
far from having a monouoly of the
rich and unimproved farm lands of
South Carolina.
