A Charged With Murdering
Bud Nobles at Grice's.
SECOND DECREE VERDICT.
The Penalty as Prescribed by Law is
From One to Thirty Years?Missie

An Accessory Before and After the
Fact, is Given a Similar Verdict.
Both Defendants Are Natives of
Horry County.
A Whiteville correspondent writing
to the Wilmington Star, under
date of July 2tfth, has the following
to say anent the trial of Robert

"The trial of the case against
Missie Ma low and Robert Grainger
charged with killing Bud Nobles at
. Gricos, is still in progress and will
consume the greater part of the
week. The room is full all the time. 1
The defense has concluded its testimouy
and yesterday Missie Marlow
* was put upon the stand aud subjected
to rigid examination. She
was followed by Robert Grainger.
The testimony of the two exactly
j/t* tallied.
Missio Marlow was neatly dressed
in a blue skirt and white waist and
wore a "pretty bonnet with a
llower garden on it." She made her
statement iu a very deliberate man
ner, aud seemed cool and collected.
She punctured her testimony with
such exclamations as, "He sure 1
did," or "Sure didn't." She stood
the cross examination well, but her

thecounsol for the State probed her
too deeply. She is a very pretty
young woman with rosy cheeks and
has not a bad face.
"Robert Grainier is a young man
apparen t!y some 21 years of age. He
was clean shaven, has black hair and
eyos, and dressed in black.
"The general lino of the testimony
is such as has already been pubj
lishcd, with slight variations. The
followirg is the statement of Missio
Marlow, and which is the most important:

and raised in South Carolina. K?>sw
Bud Nobles; he was my lirst cousin:
knew him ail my life. I had nothing
to do with the killing of Bud Nobles,
though I U now all about it. Hud
Nobles came to Grice's and on to an
^ olu road, and asked us to go home
with him. We went on almost to
an old colored man's house and
Mac Tyce said. "Let's stop and
take a drink of whLkey.' Robert
Grainger said, 'I don't want any,
but will stop and let you drink.'

got out and took gun out of buggy,
he told Grainger to get a quart of

drink, when wo wont on the other
side of the colored man's house.
The colored man said to us not to
kick up a fuss in front of his house
Robert Grainier told him they
hudn' done anything an J attend to
his own business* The negro followed
us and Grainger asked him
what he meant by it? He denied following
us. He refused to go back
and Grainger said, 'I'll give you
something to gc back for.' Ho hit
the man one lick and the negro kept
on calling him a liar. Robert then
bit him two more licks. Mrs Hemmons
came up and Robert was walk*
ing ahead of mule in road. I got,
out of buggy and we went ofT and
left negro and Mrs Mammons. Went
down toward Smith's store and saw
Wilev Haramons, John Hlnsoti and
Bud Nobles coming. Wiley Hammons
hollered, 'Hold on there, you
rascals! What's so much
trouble about?' I told Robert to
listen to those people cursing them

stopping the mule turned its head
* out in the woods. I looued back and
they weie hitting Mac Tyce. I saw
them dragging him out of the
buggy. I said Met V go and leave
Mae Tyce.' We started up a liitle
foot path to go into the Mt Tabor
\ road to go home. We were walking
fast as we could not to be running.
As soon as they saw us leaving
they left Mac Tyce, and when Robert
saw he could not get by them he
stopped. Wiley Hammond said,

ert said, 'Folks, I ain't done anything
to you.' Wiley Hammonsand
John Hinson were coming first, Bud
* Nobles back of them. Robert Grainger
hit Wilev Hammons with his
gun, and before he could hit Bub
Nobles, Bub had him by the arms
and John Hinson had a knifo and
cut him twice. I said for the Lord's
don't kill him. After a little fussing
and cussing I went almoH up
to them They shoved R >bert
down, and he told them if they
dldn' get off him he would uuri
somebody. I
"He then raised up on his elbow
and we then left. Hammons told
Hinson to get a pun and tinish the
rascal. Robert then shot
down therv&d losciri them. Met
Huck Tyler on tha road home. He
saw the corn shirt and asked him
about it. Robert asked him to se?
how bad he was cut. Mack Tyson
came in and said he didn't expect to
see him.there."

"After a fair and impartial charge

by Judge Weedbee the case against
Robert Grainger and Missie Marljw,
on trial for murder, was given
to tbe jury at 5:30 this af:ornoon.
Tbe jury was out just one hour,
when they returned a verdict of
guilty of murder in the second degree
agaiust both of the defendants.
The Marlow girl and Grainger were
overwhelmed over the verdict, The
sentence of the court was as to
Grainger, 30 years in the penitentiary;
as to Missie Marlow, 15
years. "
