SUBSCRIPTION ONE DOLLAR PER YEAR H, H* WOODWARD. Kciltor THURSDAY. AUGUST 3 1911 The democrats in Congress will -- * 1 solidly support mu wooi vunu ???.Ision bill. Tho farmer to be successful must have his corn crib and smoUehouse ii own his bickyard and not in Chicago or Kansas City?that is, they must raiee enough supplies for home consumption. This may bo an oft re peated tale, but it is as true today a the day it was first told, and in it lie> tho true secret of successful and independent farming. "A good character," eonstrutec "to mean such a character as mat be trusted by a modest, chase anr virtuous female with a feeling of security," is one of the proposec qualifications of an elector to exercise tho elective franchise in Georgia. And thus woman is not onl} the architect of man's moral character, but is also to be the arbitor o! his political destiny. In this connection the thought naturally comet up, who is to vouch for the qualili lions of the "female." Columbia gets the' Corn Exposition, and the great national corn show will be held in the capi lal of South Carolina in 1913, so it is announced, It may or may noi be a typographical error in reference t-o the year in which the exposition will be held, but of this v/c will learn more fully later on. In the meantime it behooves the champion cort, growers of Horry to prepare lot this great event by of way a carefui and intelligent selection of the ground and 10 thoroughly prepare it As a corn growing county there are but fe/V in the State thai can equal Horry and not one that can surpass it. It only remains for her people to have faith in her possibilities and show that faith by their works. We neeo have no fears but what the soil oi Horry will do the rest. The American Federation of Labor proposes to raise a million dol lar fund by popular subscription among its members to bo used in the defense of J J McNamara, chanted with dynamiting. It is estimate d that a contribution of only 25 cents per capita will raise over this amount and not the kast trouble is anticipated in raising it. This trial promises to be the most desuera'eand far reaching clash that has yet occurred or will likely occur again in years to come botween cooperate interests and labor. No ma ter what the outcome of the clash may be it will mark an epoch in American history that will leave its impress upon the civil and political destinies of the people for generations yet unborn. By reason of this trial labor is nearer together today than it has ever been, There is no question about this statement being absolutely true, because the persecution of the McNamara's by organized capital, backed by the servile minens of capital who, in the name of the law and under its arbitary protection and sanction degrades labor and worshina - rj * m ?'w the throne of mammon, is regarded in labor circles as an unmistakable and a direct attack upon organized labor and hence the issue has been clearly joined and the battle is on, and with the slogan cry of "Lay on McDutT, and damned be he who first cries bold, enough!" the solid ranks of labor will march on to glorious victory or disgraceful defeat. It takes not a prophet nor yet a son of a prophet to read the signs of the times for labor, bound together bv a common iuterest and a common destiny, will use the ballot as a protection of their civil and political rights and for the betterment of the condition of themselves, their wives and their children. The handwriting is on the wall and wise indeed is he who reads the cryptogram aright and gives heed to its warning. r ' 1 ' Mr J A Lewis represented Horry in the State B'armers' Union, which assembled in annual convention in Columbia last week.
