Dairy Doings.
Most trouble in raising calves comes
from use of dirty palls and troughs.
Give the calf clctpi water and clean
food that doesn't vary in quality from
day to day.
Fertility can bo built up faster upon
the dairy farm than upon any other
kind of a farm.
Dried brewers' grains arc valuable
to feed with silage to milk cows or
young growing stock, but cannot be
| recommended for fattening purposes.
' Thev should not be fed alone, but
should be mixed with heavier and
more concentrated feeds, like gluten
and cottonseed meal.

The great Count Salgo was an instructive
example of the habit of mind
of the Japanese. The count was in insurrection
against his emperor In 1873
and was nearly In the toils, and he |
knew It, so in his stronghold he em- j
ployed his leisure time In playing chess ,
| with hi$ immediate friends. Iteports j
< kept coining in from the outposts, each
one more disheartening than the last. |
P.ut the count still went on playing
i chess, while the utmost good humor j
j and pleasant raillery continued among
tho whole party. Yet another messen- |
gcr from the outposts came in, which
left no doubt as to the situation. Stjtfl
the count and ids companions went on
playing. "Your move, sir," were tho
words that broke the absorption of the
moment. Then when there was a
! pause in the game at which ho could
rise without 4>eing discourteous to his
guests the count got up and said,
"Gentlemen, now it is time." He directed
some one to send for his swordbearer.
Tho man advanced and imme
j diately received his orders. A few secI
onds Inter Count Saigo's body and
, liond had been separated at one heavy
blow.
Giant Hawaiian Eels.
There are three well knowu varieties
of eel found in Hawaiian waters. The
largest is the big gray fellow which so
closely resembles its cousin, the conger.
He is voracious and fearless, and
the natives tackle him with caution, for
when cornered ho fights viciously and
can inflict a nasty wound with his
powerful jaws, which bristle with
needlelikc teeth. The other species
are flat, flabby looking customers, with
fantastic markings of black and brown
and many shades of gray. On an eel
of this sort the skin, appears to hang
loose from the body, and when disturbed
the head swells like a puff adder's.
Those eels seldom attain a
greater length than three feet and love
fo locate in the crevices of a stone
breakwater, from which they dart out
Incessantly and make havoc among
any school of small fry which may bo
Innocently disporting themselves within
striking distance. These hooded
eels have been known to haunt a particular
spot for over a year. They are '
good eating despite their unprepossessing
appearance. \ j
