A NOBLEY0UN6HER0 DEAD
A Very Sad Occurrence Took Place at
Myrtle Beach Last Thursday Which
Cast a Deep Gloom Over tne Entire
Community.?A Son of Mr R. B.
Nichols Gave Up His Life to Save
Those of His Sisters and Little Miss
Annie Sessions.
Mvrtle Beach was saddened last
Thursday morning by the drowning
of Richard Nichols, 18 years of age.
^ and Miss Annie Sessions about 14
years of age. The remains of Miss
Sessions were brought over on the
afternoon train anu the interment
took place on the following day at
^ Lake Side Cemetery and those of
Mr Nichols were interred in the fam
ily burying ground at Cool Spring
in the presence of a large crowd of
sorrowing relatives and friends.
; Early on Thursday morning Miss
Annie Sessions and her two smaller
sisters, Julian Lewis a young lad
and Maude Nichols were bathing in
the surf. There was no grown people
in with them it seems and none
nearby at the time. It was low tide
hut the sea was smoother than usual
at that hour. The girls seemed to
get beyond their depth and made
out cry. Richard Nichols, a brother
of Maude Nichols, was uot in the
surf, but he saw the trouble of the
I children and went in wild nisciotnes
on to save them. He saved two
young girls, and went back to get
Miss Sessions but at this time he
* / became exhausted and went down
w himself, and when rescued was past
* recovery.
Mes.-rs J A Garran and J S Stanley
also Goul Stevens a negro carpenter
were at work on some new cottages
on the beach and they all went as
quickly as they could to render assistanee.
Mr Garran brought
Richard Nichols out by hard efforts.
Ho could not bo revived. Goul
^ Stevens succeeded in saving the
life of Maude Nichols. As to Annie
Sessions, she was brought out by
J S Stanley and Joe Sirkis, but too
late to revive her, and it seems that
she was already dead when rescued
from the water. This unfortunate
occurrence took place just before 9
o'clock.
A message reached Conway quickf
ly and Dr H H Burroughs was taken
over to the beach in an automobile
of H L Buck. Dr J S Dusenbury
went over ou the special train which
left here for the beach as soon as an
engine could be obtained. Dr
Scarborough was called from Burcol,
Everything possible was done to
bring the crowned childreu back
to life but without success.
Richard Nichols was the eldest
t son of K u iN.cnois lie naa accepted
a position withW Boyd Jones,
| the omrchant at Justice, S, C., and
was with a family party to spend a
few days at the beach. Annie Sessions
was a daughter of Mrs K G
9 ^ Sessions, and a lovable little girl.
A number of piople in Conway,
; upon hearing the distressing news
on Thursday morniug, went over to
f the Beach on the special train.
The bodies were met at the depot
late in the day by a large number of
r the associates and friends of the
j dead.

No Summer School for Teachers. |
To the teachers who are interested 1
in a summer school. The State
Superintendent of Education in- \
forms me that he cannot hold any J
summer schools this year for want 1
of funds. He said that the fund (
from which he got the money to pay
the expenses of the summer school
raised only $ii,400 a year and it cost
$5,500 to give each county a month t
of summer school. 1
To the trustees and patrons who '
want better school buildings. The
State Superintendent of Education ;
informs me that the building fund,
$20,000 is half checked out. Horry 1
is tiling some applications and hope
that all who think of filing an application
will not defer the time. If
you tile the application one day lute
you will be out a year or longer if
the legislature does not make another
appropriation.
To trustees of special districts.
If you are in Conway any of my
office days, Saturdays or salesdays,
come in and sign your blank for
State aid to extend the term of your
school. If it is not convenient for
you to come to Conway during the
next monlty, write me and 1 wiil
send you a blank.
Last year Horry got more State
aid than any other county in the
State and 1 know that you rather

ilr Skipper's Version of the Drowning
of Mr Berry Carter.
Health of this community is very
food at this writing.
Mr Editor, as you have had a
tnrt. nittr-p. in vnui* naner concern
ng the drowning of Berry Carter
,t Red Bluff last Sunday, and I beag
his companion, I would like to
;ive the readers of the Herald tho
rue way it happened iu a very
hort form. Berry came and spent
Saturday night with me and Sunlay
morning wo went to Daisy and
tayed there a while. Then we
i^ent down to Michael, and after
pending a while, Berry suggested
hat we go to Avery Todd's and
peud dome time with his son. We
rent to Mr Todd's and took dinner
lr Louie Duncan was there and afer
dinrer some of the boys proosed
that we go to the river bathlg
to which all agreed. Birry and
lyself went in but the other boys
id not. We both swam the river
hree Limes. We had a small boat
ut in the river and it had drifted
ff into deep water, Bjrry was not
s good a swimmer as myself and 1
ras getting somewhat tired and
new that Berry was also. He said
e was going to got the boat but 1
old him I would go after the boat <
ivself. He said no, ho would go 1
u
nd then started oil' into deep water i
nd 1 saw in a moment that he
jrned pale and seemed to be failig.
I swam right up besido him '
nd told him 1 would go with him i
nd get the boat. By that time I
iw he was nearly exhausted and I
aught hold of his arm and told him
j paddle with his other arm ard '
ot be afraid as I saw he was very 1
)uch frightened, and we would get
ne boat. By this time he clinched
ie with both hands aud we sank;
hen we rose to the top and sank
gain. Then I realized that it was
it.her to break his hold on me or
>ose my own life. By being a good
eal stronger than Berry was, I
roke his hold on me and he went 1
own. I stayed right there to catch
im by the hair when he came to
he top again, but he did not come, i
We recovered his body Monday at j
oon and on Tuesday he was buried
ear Daisy at the Carter graveyard.
To one can tell the trouble it gave
ie, but knowing I did all that was 1
i my power to save him gives me '
reat consolation. I deeply feel for
is heart broken parents, and am
roud to say they don't lay any ,
lame on me. Berry was a good
oy. He leaves a father and mother,
wo brothers, and one sister to
lourn their loss, besides a host of 1
fiends. John Skipper.
