"The Unceasing Effort for the Right"
The International Sunday School
Committee has selected for today's
temperance lesson, a part of a prophesy
by fsaiah as something like
2640 years ago.
In most scathing terms the prophet
denounced the national sins
placing particular emphasis upon
the evils of intemperance. The lesson
committee gives us this passage
*? ? M/MtOI M /f
lor tne speciuc purpose ui uiuuou^
the Sunday school to a more intense
and correct realization of the blighting
tendency of the evil and also to
its correction and final over throw
while the eastern phraseology of
of the lesson text is not such as
common in our western world, yet
the thoughts which underlie the
teachings aro as applicable to us at
Loris today as they were to the
Israelites at Jerusalem over two
milleniums ago. The evils ol in
temperance havo cursed the world
from then until now and are still
cursing the world. These undeniable
facts call upon us professors of
Christ at Loris and throughout our
whole Christian land to continue the
fight using the same weapons,
marching under the same banner till
this great enemy of the church shall
have been put to rest. Shall we
hope for it? Shall we pray for it?
11 - 1- e -_ !iO c-i i 11 _A
v??nail wo worK lor u.r ouuu we siup
the demon from recruiting among
our children for his supporters?
Christian soldiers, stop, renew your
allegiance to the captian of our salvation,
and here affirm that you
will never lay down your arms iu
this glorious cause till King Alcohol
will cease to recruit his ranks from
among those dear ones God has intrusted
us to raise in his nurture
and admonition.
The evils of strong drink have
cursed the world for a long time and
the centuries have argued for total
abstinence agaiust everything that
can intoxicate as an offset against
the evils of intemperance* In the
language of Ber.jimin Franklin,''the
American patriot and philosopher,
"So long as temperance puts wood
od the tire, n&eal in the barrel, flour
in the tub, mon^y in the purse,
credit in the country, contentmenb
in the house, clothes on the back,
and vigor in the body, so long art?
we called upon as Christian soldiers
to put forth the unceasing effort for
the right,"
"Wue unto them that rise up
early in the morning that Uiey may
follow strong drink that 'continue
Tintil night till wine inflame the*n"?
Isaiah 5-22. Following like a beast
led by a rope not free agents but
slaves to perverted appetites. An
appetite that drinks to excess and
is never quenched.
Failures in business not respected
on earth with heweushut out from
view Oh, the woes and horrors of
strong dr nk It inflames meu to
every ra h, fco'uh aud wicked deed,
and I might add to every possible
crime Those who indulge in it all
are like the infatuated moth that
ll:es in'o the flame to be scorched
then a second time, though burn',
hies again into the fl ime and so on
till at last it is burnt to death.
Don't pride yourselves yo poor
deluded moderate drinkers, that the
J-mited quantities you take do nr.t
injure you Look here ray friends,
you do not pretend to be as grfa1, a
man as Alexander the Great, yet he
succumbed to the use of wine. The
penalties are often so long delayed
tha?. men think they shell escape
them but at the same time they are
sure to follow.
Njw, there are men who for
twenty years have shamed the day
and wearied the n;ght with thejr
debaucheries, yet they ^eem stror g
and vigorous, and cxcla rn look at
me, you need not tilk of penalties,
I'm as well and hearty todav as
ever, but in reality they ur< fuli of
weakness and decay like the mona
ter tree in the forest so fu'l of bloom
yet when it fell it burst op in owing
to inward decay which decay was at
work for many vears before.
Miss Ellen Ustone, the ranson
missionary captain, tells us the fad
story that the horr. rs and suffering
of her situation were ^routly ir.creased
when her captors were n >
der the effect of strong drii.k. Tbia
goes to prove that even men, heartless
men arc made meaner and mor?
hearth ss by the u o of Mron#dnnk.

Editor Herald: Please allow me
space in your valuable columns for
a few lines as we have not seen any1
thing from this place in some time.
Health of this community is bad
at this writing, also dry weather
and sorry cotton crops, sorry to say
there are so many sick ones in this
section yet. We are glad to say
they are all improving.
Mrs W A Bellamy is slowly recovering
from a severe spell of sickness.
We hope she will soon recover.
Mr W F Drew has a very sick
child but we are glad to learn that
it is improving.
We have a new church erected on
the Wilmington road known as Sber
retfc Swamp church. It is progress
iug nicely.
I wish to say a few words in regards
to the erection of the bridge
at Conway, I guess the readers of
this paper will get tired reading
bridge notes but they would not if
they could realize the benefit of it as
?in nnrner
we can, ueuj? jiiuu ~
so long, but an opeu space we hope
to soon have to town.
There is nothing more welcome in
our home thau the Herald once a
week. It is news of great interest to
its readers,
