s a a, ? VOL XXV. i hie n < A Prominent Young Man Gone Wrong. THE COMMUNITY SHOCKED When the News of the Arrest of Mr H Clay Lundy Was Made Known Last Saturday, .Charged With Robbing Registered Letters, the ComZ' liiunity Received a Distinct Shock, ' Many friends of H. Clay Land/, a very agreeable young fellow, employed in the post-oflioe for the past several years, were shocked last Saturday to learn that lie had been arrested by some post-olliceinspectors who had been in and around Con way for some time investigating losses which had happened by means of robbing registered letters. As many as a dczen different people had lost money from registered letters which had passed through ,0 ihe Conway post-ofliee and these had been variously reported to the post-ofiieo department The department had at once gone to work on the matter, but kept it a secret. No one had any idea that the young man in question hud any connection whatever with these matters. ltseeine that one of the inspectors registered a letter at Mars Bluff, S. C., the envelopebearlng the card of Eli Gregg & Son, at that town, and the euvolope was addressed to Mr. C. C. Osborne, Myrtle Beach, S, C This last was a fictitious name, there being no such person in the County, The inspector came to Conway with the letter, had the letter put in the post- oflice where it remained until last Friday morning, when it was delivered to .1? in lirto/iK in Thp insnoc.ti. IOC WA^y I bio ucawu ? w?u. ^ or watched the mail bag all the way . from Conway on the train to Myrtle B)acb, until it was delivered into the hands of the post master at that place. The iuspectbr went around into the post-oilice there, and watched the post-master until ho opened the mail This special lettor was on ' tup and when the post-master saw sir he placed it in his safe and locked it up, and proceeded to put up the rest of the mail. After this had been tinished the inspector made himself known to the post-master and got the registered letter from him. The letter contained three five dollar bills, one two dollar bill, and one one doUar bill. The letter was opened in the presence of the Myrtle B ach post-master, and the three five dollar bills had been taken g out. All ot the bil.s had been marked with a private mark, so they could bo traced, The inspector claims that Mr. Lundy deposited these same bills at the Bank of Horry, and the inspoctor got these identical bills again from the bank and they claim that they saw him when he went, into the bank t,o deposit the bills Wh?.nconfronted with 1 * the facts against him he denied it. Later Mr. Luudy having confessed to having taken the money, and on the following morning in the commissioner's court, he stated that he had taken t he money as charged by the inspectors He was bound over ^ to the United States Court. His friends at once took steps to get him out on .bail. He remained in jail until Monday, when he gave bona, with sureties, ana lie was released from the j ail Jt is stated that he will be tried in Charleston on June 20th, in the Fedoral Court. Since Jan 1st, the methods of mail 1 1 ' I <Y . ? ing registered letter uas ut-eu u.usrent and since that date they are not sent in the extra heavy envelope or \ pouch, they are sent as an ordinary letter, aud the fact that they are registered is only shown by the stamp. Tt is easy to unseal some of them, as they are now mailed. Child Killed at Florence. Little Ernest Brewer Sessions, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Sessions who live in Florence, was instantly killed at Florence on last Sunday afternoon in the street, by the running of an omnibus over its body. The chtld was only six months old It had just returned from Sunday School and was playing in the street mU.h cnmfl rd her ehilriren. when the hotel omnibus passed along the street and run over thechild causing in9tant death. The driver claimed that the vehicle was loaded high in front with burgage and ho could not see ahead of the vehicle. He drove on to the station, seemingly \in ignorance of the awful deed he had committed, and he seemed tc Know nothing of the matter until he was arrested at the station by the ofliceis. When the Case of Robert Che3tnut, Charged With the Murder of W. R. Sabin, was Called in the Orangeburg Court Last Monday, the Lawyers for (he Defense Attacked the Venire and Judge Prince Sustained the Contention, so the Court Came to an Abrupt End. Orangeburg, May 8jh. (Special)? Tois morning being the day set for the hearing as to the continuaueo in the Chestnut case, Judge Prince heard the arguments pro and con. The defense stated that they were not ready for trial, but the solicitor urged that the case be tried, as the only eye witness tfas old and infirm and something might be lost by de r, t/vu Alfn ff'ift* t U Ok /I O f il n C ^ i'.\y. j. in: auiui ucjg IUI iuu ui.iv.uuv/ being of the opinion that tho case would probably be pushed to trial then challenged the whole array of jurors, holding that tho list from which the jury was drawn did not constitute one-third of the qualified registered voters. This motion on this ground was overruled. Tho defense next moved to quash the array on the ground that the board of jury commissioners did not concur on each name which was placed in the jury box. The auditor, clerk of court and treasurer were examined along this line and the sum and substance of the testimony showed that they did not pass and concur on each name placed in the box. Judge Prince then held under tho testimony that they had not concurred as to the qualification of each man whosu name had been placed in the box and that the law required them to do so. He then held that under the state of facts that the jury was not drawn as M should have been and quashed tho entire array for this week. The judge then stated to the attorneys mat only such cases would be tried where the defendant was willing to b8 tried before tbe present jury and waived all defects, So it is a certainty that Root Chestnut will not be tried at this term of the court for the killing of W. R Sabin. It is also very doubtful if the Leysaths and Poole case will be tried for the burning at North some time ago. Too court house was crowdep with people this morning and interest was intense while the arguments were wac'ed. CD r i From Cool Spring. T.ines are ver dull here now. Mamma's Twins certainly think all of her articles are simply grand considering the source from whence they came, and of course arc always amusing and laughable. We hcp^ that you will howl, bark, scratch and whine till you are satisfied. Now, Miss Dudey, Mamma's Twins will, if they can steady their nerves, try to hold the dictionary in their hands till you come again.
